OK, but why not just use the step in the bumper? It's the same height right? I guess I just don't get the need.
This extends out further than the bumper allowing me to lean over easier...that is not my primary use however...it's intended to be the first point of impact from rear ender and protect my bumper...

Bring back the splash!
Hi IdriveG5,

Agree with the Flareside...Not the name. Splash is the sound of Turd hitting the water.... We had a "contest" inside the company on the name...Splash won out or said Marketing...None of the Truck Engineers voted for this name, so the bean counters won this one...Awful name...

I wouldn’t have trusted that vote!

I had an 03 Flareside Ranger, I liked that truck. Sold it after two years for $1,000 less than I paid.

Really appreciate you doing this. Pics from back and side - collapsed and extended would be great!!

++++++++++++
I ended up having to have the step installed by a shop. I gave up after two batteries on my Dewalt 20v impact driver couldn't get the bed hold down bolt to budge. Your mileage may vary.
The shop took about 20 minutes, including reading the install instructions.

I'm very happy with the step. The visible portions are powder coated cast and extruded aluminum and the bracket that attaches to the frame is a very heavy, 1/4" welded steel.

The only issue I can see might be that when in the up position, the spring may not have enough tension to keep it from moving a bit on bumpy roads. I doubt it would cause the step to fully deploy.

I assume the reason it's the most expensive of all of Bestop's rear mount steps is the mounting bracket required for Rangers vs. other truck makes.

Wow - this looks great! Thank you very much for the side/back and open/closed pics. The footpad is larger than I expected...and that's a good thing. Also in collapsed position it's pretty close to the bumper so it's not a "tail dragger." Agree with your assessment that the cost is high due to the bumper bracket. I reached out to AMP Research months ago on if they were going to produce one and they told me at that time - the way the bumper/mount was designed, there was no room for the step.

This looks like a winner even though it's a little pricey...but I think worth it...at least for me.

ChasVS - looking forward to your report on the eBay one :)

Thanks again P0PS!

It’s not about a step for a closed tailgate. It’s fir. Step to help you get into the bed when to tailgate is down.
Right, but @Msfitoy solution looks like it would still be covered up with the tailgate down, no?

OK, that last photo with the tailgate down makes sense to me now.

Bummer! Step arrived today and the Strp pad was broken off of the retraction assembly. No assembly/mounting instructions included and bolts and washers rolling around loose in the box. Additionally, there are holes in the top of the box from handling so no idea if all pieces are there.

Dang - that is not a good sign at all! Broken part, no packaging, and no install instructions :(

Saw the eBay seller had a recent positive feedback from a buyer who bought one of these - pretty sure that wasn't you :)

Let us know if you are going to try again with the seller. Appreciate the update!

I’ve messaged the Seller with pictures. If he sends me a new pad I can replace it. Install instructions would help but I bet I can figure it out once under the truck.
