Back in them olden days the "Ranger" badging indicated a premium option package available on the F150 and F250. Kinda like the "Lariat" on the present Rangers.
XLT was top tier....an XLT Ranger was the top of the top tier.....
Consisted of paint, trim, interior, engine upgrades.

Yep, my bud saw this 80-81 Bullnose F Series at a car show this weekend with a Ranger F-150 Badge. Of course the compact pickup Ranger would launch in early 1982 as a 1983 model so no more F-Series Ramgers.

Did they all have that trim on the side rear glass? I dont recall ever seeing that before ... there was a F250 Ranger that sat in the showroom at a local dealer but I dont recall that split rear glass 🤔, thats a fancy girl right there 😉

Find a pic of a "plain jane" F-150 from 80's and you'll see a very plain truck....no chrome trim, no side body trim, a single color body paint, very plain interior.
I had a 1980 F-150 shortbed...entry level with a 6 cyl and a 4 speed....first speed was a granny gear.
Only option aside from am radio was pwr steering and brakes and air cond. No fancy exterior or interior trim, steelies.
Used it to pull an 18 foot camper which it did for 4 years till we went to a bigger camper. Never had a bit of trouble with it and for the times, the 300 cu in 6 did just fine towing that camper.

The Ranger Name started out as the base Edsel before moving to F-150. The top trim for the Edsel was the Citation. After Ford abandoned the copyright, GM picked it up for the mighty X-body Chevrolet.

Little history......
This was actually the first "branded" Ranger.....
1950-51 Ford Panel with a 4x4 conversion by Marmon Harrington....
It was called the Ranger......

My uncle had an ‘85 Lariat with that same window.

As mentioned, Ranger was a trim level on the F-Series at the time (70's and 80's)
What it included varied by year but generally.....
Custom - base truck, vinyl seats and floor, painted bumpers, nothing fancy.
Sport Custom - slotted between the Custom and the Ranger, had a few interior upgrades and chrome, full wheel covers, sort of what an STX is now.
Explorer - replaced the Sport Custom. Had fancy side stripes and a hood ornament. My ex-father-in-law had one.
Ranger - fancier interior and exterior trim, carpet, woodgrain dash.
Ranger XLT - top of the line Cowboy Cadillac. What you wanted if you were going to haul a camper or trailer.

If you were towing a trailer than an F-150 or F-250 would do....
If you were carrying a truck camper than you wanted one of these bad boys...F-350 Camper Special with the extended wheelbase......
When I was towing a camper in the 70's I always dreamed of getting one of these but on a cop's salary back then just couldn't swing it.....
