Another Bed option for the Ranger

I'm not sure if this one has been discussed before or not, but out of Canada near Edmonton you guys have Set Overland as an option for a Tray Type bed for the Ranger. They can make one for my Frontier as well!

I have already spoken with the guys up there and they are cool! How cool you ask? Well even though I need to save a few pennies before making the purchase, they had no problems discussing things with me for what I want to do and how it could be done. Also if the Bed is in good shape, you have the option to trade it in if you get it installed up there at their shop.

Cool option I guess. But I really struggle with the huge overhang behind the axle. Visually it just makes me uncomfortable thinking of the frame stress if fully loaded. Probably perfectly fine. But to mentally work for me I’d need to stretch the frame so I could center the axle under the bed.

Keep in mind that they have 3 different length options available. A 60, 66 and 72 inch variant. For most of us with Crew Cab 5 ft Beds, we would want to stick with the 60 or 66 inch beds. Those with the 6 ft Beds would stick with the 72 inch. The other cool think with these beds is you don't have to have every option right away. You can start off basic and add as you go. This is good for those on a budget.

EDIT: I did look real quick and the overhang you see is with a 72 inch model. I personally would not recommend it myself.

With Chinese Parts!

Something to understand with the Beds from Set Overland is that the parts are sourced from Canada and made in Canada. If you ask me I would rather have stuff that is made in US, CA, AU or JP with parts sourced from the country it is made in vs parts coming from China.

Another funny bit is the fact I was considering Dirt Box Overland as well since they are local to Colorado. Well they just got taken off the list since it's all overpriced Chinese Parts. On top of that there is a big issue with Communication over there(or lack there of).

Looking at the hitch, it appears it only sticks out as far as the bumper on a stock Ranger. So, same, but different, but still same.

My truck bed is not centred over the axle, the Screw even less so.

Maybe it’s just the low profile of the box that throws things off. They really should raise that bed rail to proper “design fault” height.

It's the same for my Frontier. I was taking some basic measurements yesterday and found that the 66 would be right above the hitch just like the bumper. Not bad when you think about it as I could have both a center drawer with Water Tank with the 66 inch bed. Sucks that I won't have the front tool box though.

The flexibility of the design is cool. Start off with a tray, add some tool/storage cases later. Decide you won’t be mounting a camper unit afterall and throw on bedsides and a tailgate or just have them for when the camper’s not on it. I wonder if that approach is any different than what the suppliers in Australia offer.

I’m sure the cost can get pretty high but folks that are going this route are usually very aware of what the’re in for.

So much fun to mod or build task-specific trucks.

I will agree that it is modeled very similar to the stuff in Australia. I believe Norweld is the closest, but I could be wrong.

Can the cost get up there? Absolutely. That said if you can plan things out right with the experience and knowledge from other setups, you can do things right and have little to no issues. As much as I enjoy having the bed with topper, there are changes that need to be made to get it where I want. Also I was doing the math on how the setup would do if I changed to the Tray and found i could shave roughly 350 lbs off fully loaded. That alone would make a huge difference!

I don't know the entire process, but I'm sure they would be willing to workout a deal if you had one to take to them. I was already informed that the installation cost would be covered if I traded the bed in. Who knows what they would do if you let them experiment with another vehicle
