Friend of mine had his 2015 Tacoma get attacked by mice twice. Both times ruined the wire harness. And a coworker had their VW wiring chewed as well.

I took someone’s advice on this form and put a bag of mothballs under all three of my vehicles and have never had another problem…..

This thread unlocked another constant fear for my ranger :LOL: first the transmission, now rats in the ceiling!

I just ran out to check my cabin air filter due to my crippling fear of mice. All clear besides a few small pieces of debris that match the tree that constantly rains down on my hood+windshield.

I may install the mesh screen anyway…

I have this - highly effective, but annoyingly she often chooses to bring them to the back door to finish off. She is an outdoor cat by preference, hence the obvious need for a comb in the picture. We keep her in at night however in a token attempt to save the local wildlife.

And also does not attract moths! A real bonus, I constantly have to clean mine in summer.

No, it doesn’t ☺, I live in the country and was inundated with mice before I did it. They chewed up my wires and insulation. You just put a bag under where the engine is. I have not had a problem since it works very well.

I spent several weeks of the Summer of 2024 cleaning up after the mice infestations in my 2021 Ranger as I found their hangouts.

They were residing in these areas;

1). Top of cabin filter
2). Console under shifter boot
3). Console under E-Brake boot
4). Back of driver's seat cover on rear seat/foot well side.
5). Headliner behind cabin light. They get into the headliner via the A-Pillars.
6). Remnants that included feces, urine and seeds behind the rear seats and under the storage bins beneath the rear seat.

I meshed over the HVAC intake holes in the firewall and the pressure vent behind the rear seat.
After these fixes and the ensuing cleanup I have been mouse free in the cabin of the truck.

Stay tuned, there is more about headliner infestations and the possibility of learned behavior;

I was so focused on resolving the problem in my truck I pretty much ignored the other car in the garage. That would be my '65 Mustang Fastback.
When they could no longer get into the newer truck they took up residency in the headliner of the Mustang.
There are too many unclosable openings to plug, cover with mesh, etc. on the Mustang.
Headliner point of entry?
A-Pillars again hence my "learned behavior" comment.
Holy $#!+, when they have they have that much space they will use it, same as they did when they were camped out in my Ranger's headliner.
The attached pictures are what I vacuumed out of the headliner laying in the bottom of my 16 gallon shop vacuum and the inside/backside of the Mustang's headliner. Disgusting project.

If you have to do anything like this on your truck (or car)...wear an approved mask.
Most people have leftover masks from the pandemic so wear them or get some.
Mice feces and urine can be carrying all kinds of viruses.

I am starting on Stage II of the cleanup...disinfecting.

The wearing of a mask that @MrJ1s mentions is very important. Rodents carry and spread Hantavirus through their urine, saliva, and feces. Cleaning it up creates dust, which gets into your nose, mouth, eyes, and lungs. It can cause serious illness and death - on average, 30 people die from it in the U.S. annually.

How important is meshing over the rear pressure openings? I was just planning on meshing the air intake

If you’re in an area with a lot of rodents and you’re closing off the cabin air intake because they’re already a problem, I recommend doing the vents. Removing the rear seats is easy and you only need a bit more hardware cloth.

Figures this thread would pop up today.
Was going to take the wife's Subbie to church night and as soon as I started it I hear this pop or thud noise. No lights on the dash, engine sounds and feels normal. So I was already to put in gear and leave when I had a good thought for once. Look under the hood dummy so I did

I'm like what the heck caused that. Checked the pulleys and they were fine and the tensioner spring was pretty stiff. Then I seen it. This little arm over next to the expansion tank. So now I know. I found the rest of him underneath the convertor. Boy that would of been ripe.
