Taking a poll if you fellas don't mind.

TLDR: Blown head gasket and slight overheating on the motor. Repair shops and Ford have quoted me price for motor replacement. Ford says $7600 for new motor no miles, repair shops have quoted $5500 for motor with 30k miles. Let me here your opinion pleae.

I would go new with warranty but I’m not much of a risk taker on stuff i can’t fix myself.

Why not pull the head and put a new head gasket on it?? If only slight over heating, unless there is other damage and it's a high mile engine to start with, a blown head gasket is not always a fatal condition. Would expect it to be not pricier than a used engine of unknown history.

Yes, why are they not quoting repairing your current motor?
Because most of the shops out there just plug and play. My friends shop won't even do cam phasers on a Ford, quotes them a whole motor. Too much work to do out there, they can be picky and chose to only do swaps.

More of the fact the shop probably doesn't have all the specialty tools and the techs would rather take the easy route. I don't blame them.

Same here.

Also, I'd consider how many miles you drive and how long you plan to keep it. If you want to keep it forever, go for the new motor. To me, it's $2K for two years of life (assuming 15k miles/year). $2K would be well spent if you got another entire year or two or three out of the vehicle.

If you might sell it down the line anyway, go used.

I drive a lot, so I'd want the newer motor with zero miles.

No way I would consider the used unless that is all you can afford

In response to some of the questions.

I have been quoted a head gasket repair and a replacement motor from several shops. The price was about 2k difference with the caveat that there might be lower block damage.

After doing some digging here on the forum and online I have found that Ford did redo the motor by boring some cooling holes between the cylinders. This was done after all the issues with the 2.3 in the mustang, focus rs, and transit. Sadly, the cooling holes mean more reliability when everything is running smooth, but if you do overheat the block there is that much less material and potential warping issues.

My truck is a 19 and has 99k on it. I would like to keep the truck long term, but am worried now. The 30k motor and new motor are both infants compared to the milage of the truck.

I am leaning more toward the 30k but still up in the air.

I would do the used motor, this isn’t a collectible car or something rare like a Ferrari. Unless money is no object and the $7600 gives you peace of mind, it’s a mass produced truck, many of them will be in wrecking yards with just rear end collisions = many motors for years and no shortage of supply.
