2020 Ranger 37,000 miles - Transmission began noticeable slipping at 30-35 mph.

Performed TSB 24-2101 and failed for harsh 3-5 shift. After rebuilding valve body still failed for harsh 3-5 shift. Identified CDF drum failure - cylinder sleeve had moved and burnt F clutches.

After this, road test found vehicle shudder - torque converter shudder at 128 rpm. Replaced torque converter.

Vehicle seems okay for now.

Total time in Manassas VA Ford dealer - 6+ weeks (1 week for Christmas/New Year). Initial issue was identified in first week. Truck sat for 5 weeks before they could start repair.

Covered under extended warranty with loaner but not a good experience for future Ford purchases.

THIS sort of SHIT is disgusting. While my 2022 Lariat / Tremor (Everything on it build, except for the “deleted” stuff I had to add myself) only has 9.5k miles on it. And…. So far is fine. It outta be. But I have ZERO faith in my (first ever FORD, you know the “Built FORD Tough”) FORD. No modern vehicle should have any transmission issues even in 100k miles. None of my other vehicles ever did.

If I were at the point your are, and others are, I’d have a lawyer absolutely.

Why would he need a lawyer? Ford repaired it under warranty and gave him a loaner.

Try your luck with a Chevy or Toyota.

Well had a Taco for 21 years (Pre-Runner 2003), in ALL that time one "recall", front ball joints. ONE water pump, ONE O2 sensor, ONE steering shaft (just below the steering wheel, the break away pin / hole began to wear causing a "click" when steering), that is IT in over 20 years. Of course a few batteries, tires, shocks, fluids and belts.

So, some would say, "why don't you have one now and not the Ford?" Well, I'm 6'4" and never really fit IN my Taco (you know, they are notorious for poor seating comfort, etc.), but 25 years ago I was "younger" and dealt with it. I don't want a "full sized" truck (Tundra), soo... one of, if not the top reason for the Ranger was because I fit in it. I really do like the look of it, my Cactus Grey Tremor, but I sort of shy away from even visiting this group, for fear of what I might read, some other problem I might expect to have.

Oh and no have not addressed the recall notice that my front windshield might fall out! Too fearful of what damage will likely happen to my otherwise pristine truck by the dealer (well actually it's not the dealer that does that work).

I "like" my tuck now, but have ZERO faith in it's long term durability. Especially when we have people here, some with WAY less than even 20k mi, dealing with what appears to be a design defect that ALL of our trucks have.

Fords been making vehicles a long time, it's hard to believe they couldn't get something as critical as the transmission right (or installation of a windshield).

The OP says "6+ weeks".

The law says (trust me, I've been down this road, the truck I had before my Ranger, I had about 2k mi on it TOTAL, and the dealer / Mfg had it for almost longer than I had it, and STILL couldn't fix the problem AND damaged so many other things on my "new" / 2k mi on it tuck trying to fix it, it was disgusting)....*

Sooooo I have no love for any dealer or Mfg. If they are selling a defectively designed vehicle, as the Ranger / transmission is, OR the issue I had with my "before Ranger" truck (also a design flaw that many others had) .

If you buy a toaster and it is defective, you bring it back for a full refund or replacement. For some reason we are fooled into, and accept, that a $50,000.00 vehicle should somehow be different.

*The law:
In California, a vehicle can be considered a lemon if it's been in the repair shop for more than 30 days for a problem covered by its warranty. The 30 days don't need to be consecutive.

The poster you responded to is in Virginia not California. Virginia’s lemon law is in effect for the first 18 months from taking new delivery. So they would have had no claim under the lemon law.

The 2003 Taco was just a more reliable vehicle than the 3rd/4th generation Tacoma or the 5th/6th gen Ranger. With this being said, the older Tacos are not immune to issues, like rust for instance. The powertrain in the 1st and 2nd generation Tacoma's was bulletproof. Overall, my Ranger has been good to me, but there are times I think I should have stuck with the 2011 Tacoma

I'm 6'4'' too and the 4th gen Tacoma and current gen Colorado are much better for driver's leg room than the Ranger. The Colorado was one of the few vehicles that the driver's seat actually goes back too far for me. If I had to replace my Ranger at this time, I would probably buy a Colorado just for the leg room comfort.

Well, according to the article I posted, trans problems, especially in this day and age of advanced electronics, Toyota is not immune from them. You could compare previous generations of the Ranger with high regards as well.

At some point in 2022 they improved the transmission. Hopefully you got a good one!
