I take mine to o'reilly's. The stores i take it to have a door in the rear side of building. Its always open and walk in and dump the oil. Throw the jugs in their dumpster. I use the jugs the oil comes in, bleach or vinegar jugs, milk jugs, etc. I've never been asked if i purchased my oil from them but i think in my state they have to accept it.

Actually, you can leave it after hours at the door

All my automotive fluids go into old 5 quart oil containers and drop off at Autozone...they just ask if I need my container back or not...easy...
O'Rielly's is very similar. I just check the window by the door, they put up a warning when they are full. I use one of the bigger oil/fluid plastic cans and only go when I am close to needing space for the next time. I leave it in the truck until I talk with the staff and they always empty it in back and wipe it off if they drip.

My county has a recycling center that accepts used oil for a nominal fee. I feel better paying a small fee than rolling into a business that I don't use and asking them to take it. They probably make money off it some how, but still….
Usually everyone is returning the used oil to the same business that they bought the oil from. These same businesses in many cases sell the used oil so they do okay from the oil business. Your recycling center probably sells the oil too.

Over the years I've collected various 5 gal gas cans for various equipment. Long ago took one and used it to store oil from changes. Goes right from drain pan to the container. When it hits 4-5 gallons, I take it to local O'Reillys or dump recycling bin.
Large 5 gal gas can does away with trying to dump it into one gallon or 5 qt containers....lot less mess, and only 2 trips a year (2 vehicles X 2 changes each + lawn equipment)
And, yes, gas can is well marked for "used oil".

From Oreillys website:

Instead of searching ‘where to recycle transmission fluid’ online, simply bring in used fluids, including motor oil, compressor oil, power steering fluid, gear oil, transmission fluid, hydraulic fluid, and oil filters to your local O’Reilly Auto Parts store. It’s as easy as bringing in an oil drip pan, drain pan, bucket, or closed container of the above listed fluids to an O’Reilly Auto Parts location close to you. Once you’re at the store, we only ask that you fill out some information, including your name, address, and the amount and type of fluid you’ll be recycling. Once this is completed, our parts professionals will take your fluid to the waste collection container at the back of the store, drain your container, and return it to you. Bringing your used fluids to O’Reilly helps ensure you’re taking the right steps to practice responsible waste management and minimize environmental impact.

I work for a national auto parts chain store. we take used oil (engine oil, transmission fluid, all goes in the same tank, but no gasoline). We don't make anything on accepting the used oil (in fact, we pay a company to take it away). a couple local shops we deal with will take the oil and use it in a waste-oil heater.

Ditto on drop off locations- but I use the empty 5 quarts and also use empty Laundry Detergents as well for storage.
we won't take used oil if its brought in a laundry detergent container. it contaminates the oil and creates all sorts of problems for us

I take mine to O'riellys no questions asked. A friend had a neighbor that was a street rodder. Did his own oil changes. Drilled a hole in his garage floor and poured it in said it took care of the termites. He passed, house sold, new buyers inspection found active termites. Bad idea don't do it. :headbang:
anyone else remember hearing about a 1963 issue of Popuar Mechanics which suggested you dig a deep hole in your back yard, and fill it with gravel, and dump your used motor oil in the hole?

That’s because he didn’t drill enough holes or make them nearly as big as they should be. Dave doesn’t know it yet (I’m doing it as a surprise - kind of an early house warming present) but I’ve been busy in his garage doing it the right way…

I still have a ways to go - you can see the pilot holes I laid out in a grid pattern - it covers the entire garage…

When I’m done, there’ll be no termites to worry about and no matter where he is in the garage, he’ll have easy access to instant disposal. No fussing around at the transfer station, landfill, local garage or auto parts store.

@AzScorpion is gonna LOVE it! ?

When I was a kid we would spread it on the driveway to keep dust down. Full circle, came from the ground and went back to the ground. Now my Kubota dealer takes it. Remember when Sears used to sell recycled oil by the gallon in all their auto centers. Had to byo container.
