I went to Ford dealer in our SUV and bought a new battery, hauled it home and installed it in my 2019 XLT Ranger.
turned key on, flashed brights 5 times, pumped brakes 3 times,,,,nothing.
Nothing flashes, nothing changes.
Tried that routine 2 more times, nothing.
Sitting the battery voltage is 12.5 , start the engine, it's on high idle, voltage is 14.99. So it is charging.

So, the big question : Is my BMS reset?
What happens if it is not reset ? Would I get CEL or some kind of flashing light? Would it charge? Am I done, ready to drive ?

Another ? , If I had disconnected the BMS pigtail on the NEG battery clamp would the BMS still need reset?

I did not touch that pigtail, I am waiting to get my OBD2 connector then deal with the BMS .

This reset method is NOT mentioned in my owners manual, only "let sit for 8 hours "

Sounds like the correct process, i do know it takes about 10 seconds before the battery light flashes.

This is one of those things that has mixed information, yes, it is supposed to relearn the battery is now at a new charge level, same as if you had it on a charger. BUT it cannot know you have a new battery installed. (owner's manual version)

Service Manual Version, Reset BMS with a Scan Tool

Online Version, Manually Reset via the Brake, Headlight Method

Either way for me, I like the Scan Tool method, you have a confirmation that the reset is performed plus you can view the -Time since installed PID, to see a new Time Counter for the battery as an additional confirmation.

I waited at least 10 seconds.
I drove it to town, 13 miles at 60 mph, and back home. Everything was fine, no CEL, nothing on the dash flashing. Battery voltage was good, the charging system is working fine.

I let it sit for 8 hrs. after installing a new battery. Then the following day I did the headlight flash procedure and I got the battery icon to flash 3 times. I guess it worked.

I had the same experience. After replacing the battery and resetting the driver's window, I tried the manual battery reset. It didn't work for me even after several efforts. I tried again the next day and it worked fine.

12.5v is a stuffed flat battery. It should sit at min. 12.9

Letting it sit over night, it should do a recheck on its own SOC if it starts and charges 13.1v plus you should be ok ...

I installed new battery, 2019, XLT. DIDN’T do anything, didn’t know to.
Working ok year later. Or, ignorance got lucky??
Exactly.
I just did it and aside from having to reset the one touch windows, nothing seems to have changed.
Truck isn't telling me anything else is needed, and that's why I asked about it earlier.

Basically, all the BMS reset does - it resets the Time Since Installed Date (In Memory-BCM) to show that it is a newly installed battery with Low (IR)
This is a factor in the programmed charging algorithm (aging battery) that also is factored with what the BMS sensor is reading at the battery (Both Live & Sleep Mode-Re-Calibration)
As the battery ages - the IR increases so the programmed charging algorithm changes to reflect
(normal) aged battery IR increases.
So, without a Reset, the BMS/BCM does not know a new battery is installed and will continue to charge the battery as if the old battery was still installed. (Aging Battery Algorithm)

How much of a difference does it really make??‍♂
So, if you keep the BMS system (enabled) then I would advise to just reset it just to keep the system at optimum charging.
I have mine enabled and just altered the SOC to 90% and added the On-Board Desulfator, my IR is staying in the low 3's. So, I am content with that.

A bit off topic here but I've read a lot about desulfators - do you have a link for a good one?

I began to notice the low battery blue screen on startup with my 2019 Ranger. Then I saw the truck loosing functions like unlock and radio not turning on when I started the Ranger (always leave it on). Not being a smart person, I turned to this forum to learn as much as I could about this battery stuff. Great information and experience taught me a lot. I tried the trickle charger stuff, and it worked great. But every 3-4 weeks, if I stopped to see how the battery was doing, I noticed the same decline in holding a decent charge.
We went to Atlanta for Christmas, my son (who is an EE and always does his own car and truck maintance), attached a meter to check the battery and found a 40% charge and 11 volts on the battery. He charged it up, and within 8 hours the battery returned to a low charge state. He told me, as did a couple of guys on this forum, that the battery was dying and we had to replace it. It wasn't worth the risk of being stuck, even though I do carry a jump pack. We replaced the battery easily and didn't loose any memory.

I tried to do the light and brake procedure and did not see the blinking light. So, I tried it by pushing the high light switch instead of pulling it (after a few minutes). This time, the blinking light was displayed on the dash.

My son told me the BMS is more crap installed to make the owner take the truck into the dealer to be charged for a simple task. Batteries used to last 10 years, now they last only 3 - if you're lucky. If the BMS regulates the 70% charge limit, and if you don't use the BMS and approach 90% - then you're probably conserving your battery. If I couldn't get the approved blinking light, I wouldn't have worried a bit about it. From what I've read, without the BMS, the battery will be over charged. I'm guessing that means greater then 70%. The old battery lasted almost 7 years with 15k miles on the truck - not to bad.
