I just replaced mine at 4.5 years. No specific indications that it was end of life, but going into the cold season I didn't want to wake up on a camping trip and find it dead. As others have mentioned, they seem to go from working to not working with no warning these days.

ASS rarely worked due to "charging battery", but it was like that from the beginning.

Am I in trouble? I drive about 25 miles a day, 5 days a week, but I've been getting this alert some this week:

Sounds like it's on its way out. Swing by an Autozone and have them test it, it's free there. With the record heat these last 2 years I'm sure it's taken a toll on your battery.

Grrrrrrrr!
If I DO need one, should I get it there (I have bought many there since moving to AZ) or better at Ford store...or somewhere else? I don't want to put the wrong type in!

First have them check it and see what it reads. Of course you're probably just out of your 3/36 but if you're not the dealer should replace it free.

I saved this link from one of Robs @RedlandRanger post and he bought this one and it's a really good price.

Yeah, I'm out of warranty.
Figures! I would just buy that one because it's most likely on its way out. The heat there is a battery killer and my Tacoma battery only lasted 2 years and my 19 Ranger 18 months. Hopefully this one will last longer seeing as I only had it there for 1 year and it was always on a maintainer.

I usually get that message when my truck sits for 2 weeks even on the battery tender.

Amazon has an amazing deal right now but today is the last day unfortunately if anyone wants to get one.

Edit - Might want to check your size before ordering. I think the Lariat and Xlt are different sizes. Not poss!

I second the battery tender recommendation. I use it 1-2/x month on my Ranger to top off the battery. I also used Forscan to up the charging percent from 75% to 80%. I should go back and increase that to 90%. (Lariats are set stock at 75% from Ford, instead of 70%).

I get the Fordpass warning every now and then (once a month, give or take). My truck is 3.5 years old, 44k miles, driven in central Oregon (no extreme heat or humidity). The warning message is usually my reminder to plug in the battery tender.

The dealer also tests my battery when I have oil changes. So far it has tested good.

All my cars have battery jump starters as backup.

Yeah, I'm out of warranty.
My 2020 Ranger battery is now 4+ years old and revived from the near dead, but it took draconian measures that most won't do to make it last. I think I'll get another 6 years out of it now. I target 10 and have gotten longer, but you got to treat your battery right.
  • Get rid of dark current (Minimize it) - Our Rangers are thirsty for electricity even when powered off
  • Optimize charging
  • Keep desulfating it every chance you get.
It will reward you with 2x to 3x battery life.

Or keep buying batteries every 2-3 years. If you go this route check warranties for full coverage for as long as possible. You may be able to swap them out for nothing by exercising the warranty.

I went with costco, just check the sizing (different for lariat).

Does this look right?

Also, not that I've never changed a battery before, but I have not changed one in my Ranger before. Is there anything special I should or should not do when it come time to swap that will keep me from turning the truck into a brick?

Does your truck take the H7 size? Some use the H6 size that is somewhat smaller in size. Your battery cover may not fit if yours uses the H6 size and you put a H7 size in. Other than that, you can use the H7.
