I was at the Ford dealership service center getting 'the works' and had a chance to pick the service advisor's brain about the transmission - he had some 2018 Ford that had failed and he used the extended warranty to get his replaced - he was aware of the CDF drum redesign. I mentioned I was thinking of getting the filter and fluid replaced and since the plastic pan was a one-time use item, going with an aftermarket with a drain plug.

To my surprise he said they wouldn't install the aftermarket pan because of the Ford warranty and recommended rather than change the filter and pan they would backflush the 10R80 as it was to get any imbedded material out and replace the ULV with fresh. It was at least $100 less.

I don't know if this would change much short or long term. I have a follow-up appointment to look at my transmission shifting being rough.

BD has a fix for the original CDF drum. Here's a little info - they machine a lip and add a retaining ring:

Have 30,000 miles on my 2022 Ranger Lariat Tremor. Scheduled a transmission flush at the Ford dealer this past Tuesday. Dropped it off and caught a ride to work. About 30-minutes later, I get a call from the Service Advisor. The tech is wanting to know why I want my transmission flushed as I only have 30,000 miles on the odometer. I tell the Service Advisor the transmission has been shifting hard going from 3rd to 4th so I thought getting new transmission fluid in the transmission may fix the shifting issue. She tells me that the tech can take it for a drive and see what’s going on with the shifting. If there is an issue, they can reprogram the transmission and see if that makes a difference. As it’s covered under warranty, and they’re following the TSB so it’ll be documented, I figured why not.

So, I get a call mid-afternoon. Service Advisor tells me that the transmission is indeed shifting hard. The tech is working on reprogramming the transmission and that, when it’s been reprogrammed, it’ll have to go through the adaptive learning process. She tells me he’ll have it done by 4:30 and I can pick it up then.

So, an hour later I get another call. The Service Advisor asks me if I need my truck. I find this a bit odd and answer a question with a question “Why?” Well, the Check Engine Light came on when the tech did the reprogramming. In order to get it to clear, the BCM needs to be reprogrammed and there’s not enough time to get that done. So, I had to take the truck out Thursday for the reprogramming of the BCM. Just a tip if any of you need to have this done: The tech will need both key fobs to do the reprogramming. If they have only one key fob, start the process, and realize they need the 2nd fob, the truck can’t be moved as the system is locked down. I had to take my other key fob out so they could complete the process.

The truck now shifts better than it did when I drove it off the lot. That being said, I’m well aware of the issues plaguing this transmission. I feel it’s only a matter of time before I start having shifting issues again. This reprogramming was covered under warranty and it’s been documented by Ford. I’ll see where it goes from here…

The pan is 100% reusable.

Ford calls for an obscene amount of parts to be trashed once they're removed, but the trans pan isn't one of them. The gasket is even reusable.

Now, the ZF8 on the other hand. Lots of those have the filter built into the pan and must be replaced....but that's nothing we have to worry about.

The back-flushing didn't require removing the pan or replacing the filter and I was told it would cost less than $300. After seeing the thread where a member dissected a transmission filter I suppose at least initially it won't harm anything. I still have the extended warranty if all else fails. But if I feel spendy I might save up eventually to have a custom built transmission with the increased fluid capacity, Raybestos clutches and improved valve body mods - Ford warranty be damned.

That was likely my dissection.

I feel like that filter is plenty for 60K or so, I'm just iffy on using the machine. I would rather just drain and fill.

I just don't want them forcing anything through the valve body that hasn't been through the filter.

Thanks. Turns out I am still under warranty (until June), and I am having hard and delayed shifts, so I am taking it to the dealer on Monday. Let's hope they will cover it.
I heard back from the dealer yesterday. This is what I got:
They need to do a teardown on the transmission to find the internal cause of failure, that is making the Ranger hard shift/delay grabbing gears, etc. The truck is still covered under Powertrain Factory Warranty and the technician is leaning towards a CDF Drum replacement. Just have to complete the teardown to know if his hypothesis is correct, or what the root cause of trouble is.
There was more, but that was the pertinent part. I don't really know much about Transmissions, does what they say make sense?

Yes it lines up with what the TSB instructs the dealer to do. Sounds like you’re in good hands

I pretty much only drive in town. It has been on one cross country trip (California to Oklahoma), but never off road, etc. And, I am a fairly conservative driver. Take that for what it is worth.

Sounds like textbook CDF drum failure. Glad that they got you covered!

Steven, How many miles on your truck?

I am at a crossroads in my thinking. I have had sporadic bouts of bad shifting behavior since about 5K miles. I am at 20K right now on my 2020 Ranger.

I have lessened the rough shifts with transmission relearns, but I am still nervous. If I let the truck sit long enough for the fluid to reach ambient temps (mid 50's lately), and drive it, the transmission shifts rough - usually holding on when coming to a stop.... until it warms up, then it is much better.

I sincerely want to get ahead of this issue if possible and if I can't, I do not want to endanger my warranty rights. I have a PPE deep pan ready to be installed, but I am concerned that Ford will look for any reason to blame the failure on anything except the CDF drum (possibly the pan).

This entire situation sucks. I really don't want to drive the truck until the transmission self destructs. It's against my nature.

I have just over 31k miles on my 2019. I would NOT put the pan on if you think you might try to take advantage of the warranty. They were very clear with me up front that any of those types of mods (or and external damage, like an accident) would void the warranty. Luckily, all my mods are simple bolt ons (like running rails, tonneau cover, etc).

This may be a stupid question, but now that I have had the service done, is it going to reoccur after another 30k miles? Or should the above work fixed it permanently (assuming no other damage is done obviously).
