I replaced mine Wednesday night with a new unit from Ford. It was really weird at first but after a second reset and some miles it’s so nice! Every gear shift is nice and clean, so far so good. All of the issues I had with the old transmission are gone and I’m back to having a nice driving truck again.

We've had some colder weather here recently (in the 20s) and I'm noticing a couple of hard shifts when I first start driving. Totally fine once everything warms up. Is this pretty common with these trucks?

I ask because I am currently sitting at 59,900 miles...

Mine has done one or two hard shifts when it is really cold - it has done that since it was brand new. I don't worry about it and just take it easy until the trans has warmed up a bit.

Edit - "really cold" for around here is under 40. So pretty much anytime it is below 40, I get one or two hard shifts right after starting out. After that it is fine.

@ctechbob tell me/us more about this Lubguard Platinum you use. I was reading reviews and apparently the GM eight speed is notoriously balky/clunky and users claim this resolves their issues. Over time here I'm reading Ford tries to resolve sticky valve bodies that may drop trans pressure at critical moments and especially with the original CDF drum design causes more critical failure(s).

Am I reading that basically it's an ounce per quart of trans fluid? I bought a 15 oz bottle of the stuff. Since my Fitzstick has verified my 10R80 was actually properly filled from the factory I presume I need to siphon out some ULV before adding it.

Yes, I run a tune. Yes I have the ESP and I plan on changing out the trans fluid and filter in about 20,000 miles, going to an aftermarket trans pan.

Maybe I'm a little paranoid and the wife made some comment about the truck not being as smooth shifting up and down as she remembered.

I suppose if the transmission fails I'm rolling the dice on whether Ford would honor the mechanical warranty when they know full well there are manufacturing issues.

Not a whole lot to tell. I've been using it since 3700 Miles. Mine was slightly underfull and I added a 10oz bottle from the rip and have been using it at 1oz per qt since then. Even at that early mileage mine was a little dim-witted at times, something I haven't really experienced since then, although I still get an occasional bump from the stupidly programmed downshift strategy. I don't think that it is valve body related, just a side effect of the programming.

I also tow heavy and the trans is very well behaved doing that, no slipping or anything odd.

The GM 8 speed issues were down to the friction material GM cheaped out on and the fluid was a band-aid to get them out of warranty (For the most part). Funny, reading through the GM lawsuit docs, there is actually a mention of ULV/10R80's in the GM docs that actually praises the combination as having better performance than their 8 speed frictions.

Since you have the 15oz bottle, and as I recall, the trans holds 12 qts, then you should be good to go and have some left over for the next fluid swap.

And here we have a great example why I don't own a GM Vehicle anymore. They can't seem to figure out how to keep a transmission from operating correctly.

There's some real gold in the discovery documents. I spent an evening reading through them all:

Note: the 212B fluid they talk about is the original fluid spec.

https://www.cohenmilstein.com/sites...Misc. Exhibits Document - GM Litigation_0.pdf

Some of them are really good reads if you're into corporate 'oh shit' moments.

___________________________________________________________________

McVea cited internal GM documents from the defendant’s study of the transmission problem that showed that GM selected an ATF designated as “212B” and a friction material known as “LuK WFP6300.” Other documents showed that GM’s engineers found this combination to be problematic because the 212B fluid was unusually sensitive to moisture, and because the WFP6300 material had poor friction characteristics....... McVea cited GM presentations highlighting the inappropriate combination, noting that the fluid selected originally was intended to be used with a “carbon fiber” friction material, but the fluid was not changed when GM decided, in 2012, to switch to the “paper based” WFP6300 material, ostensibly citing a $2 per unit savings due to a discount from the supplier that had proposed to produce both the clutch material and torque converter assemblies. Ibid. The problematic combination was referred to contemporaneously by GM engineer Randy Melanson as “the worst friction system we got, and it’s only going to get worse with mileage, no matter what we do.”

Thanks for the heads up on the newer TSB. My 2022 with a build of 03/22 and 15K miles goes in this Tuesday for said shift complaints. Good to see that a replacement transmission is an option now.
Update: Took truck in this morning and they performed the 1st step of TSB 23-2350 which is the software update. Short 2 mile drive home from dealer and it felt better but too soon to tell. Service advisor told me that this was the steps in the TSB that they are required to do by Ford. He also emphasized that if I have any further issues to contact them asap. Also mine has the Fitzstick and I mentioned it when I dropped it off. They didn’t seem to care about the fact that I had installed it.

Here's an update for my situation. Ford would not do anything and said that I was SoL. There was a faint chance that they would be able to help out but first I would have to pay the multiple thousands of dollars to have my transmission pulled, broken open and inspected. They wouldn't even do a formal quote on a rebuild without first pulling it. The SA said it would end up being more money to rebuild than it would be to replace.

I ended up taking it to a local reputable independent. He confirmed a new replacement would be the better option as he also confirmed that rebuilding would take more labor than replacing. He was able to get me a brand new transmission installed for right around $7.5k.

Moral of the story: Never buy the first 2 model years of a car with a complicated unproven transmission. Also, Ford's warranty sucks and dealers are leeches.

sorry to hear how it worked out. its a shame ford has little to no care for its customers. no one will ever make me believe that ford is not well aware of the issues with the 10 speed auto. if they would own up and fix them (esp ones in warranty) id be a ford customer for life. mine was still around 20k miles when i went around with dealers and was basically told same as you. shit out of luck. but thats ok my buying other brands will not hurt ford. but every person that mentions a new ford to me until the day i kick the bucket is going to get my story about not buying one. will it ever match the cost of a out of pocket transmission, brakes, brake cable, and hand full of other factory defects- no. but i will at least get to enjoy being an ass lol.

Mine did get fixed under warranty but it was leaving black marks when reversing and shifting like I got rear ended, so it took one test drive for the dealer to go “no, we’re not giving this back until it’s fixed”… probably due to risk of injury or property damage!

Imagine if I was trying to slowly back out and rammed a Ferrari…that would be a bad day for all parties involved
