Are those two pics of the same differential? The first shows a totally dry demolished diff, the second is still wet and not nearly as demolished.

Yep it's the same diff. I'm sure the reason the second is wet is due to all the cleaner that was used

Ah, makes sense. The second pic is after some clean up effort.

That's not all due to lack of maintenance. Water or something must have gotten in there.
I change the diff oil in my '95 F150 at 200K and it still flowed like it should. Same with my '99 B4000 at 225K.

That' is actually diligent maintenance. It's called "sand packing" or "diff packing."
You remove the rear cover and pack it solid with white quartz granules (beach sand or sandbox sand). The quartz crystals act like miniature ball bearings!

My first guess was: the diff cover leaked, someone tried to 'fix' it by adding some of that stop-leak crapola, which didn't work so they added more. And then more. And then more? Who knows though ;-).

Bought a used '64 vw beetle when I started driving, drove nice...after a while started making lots of noise. Mechanic found transaxle filled with sawdust. Some ppl will do anything to sell a lemon!

Maintenance isn’t the scam, what they charge is. $200 for a rear dif fluid change? $75 to replace engine air filter or cabin air filter? The cost of 2 quarts of rear diff fluid is $25 and simply drain and fill. They’d have better luck getting people to agree to their air filter changes if they were charging $30 instead, considering we can get them for about $20 at AZ or OR and some folks might think it’s worth $10 to pay someone else to swap the filters (not me).

It is not just what they charge, it is them pushing services that are not needed as well. My typical example is I took my Honda Accord in for a recall fix to a dealer and they said it needed $1400 worth of services. This was several years ago (I can only imagine what the cost would be today). One of the services was warranted (timing belt replacement, which I did with my own mechanic a couple months later), but the rest were just ridiculous items that were not part of the recommended maintenance schedule and were ridiculously overpriced. The cabin air filter replacements just floor me - it literally takes like 30 seconds to replace most of them - even easier than an engine air filter in most cases.

Honestly in the car repair business is a rare commodity unfortunately.

That’s a fair point. It’s been a while since I’ve used dealer service for anything because of these tactics. My trusted shop will get my business in handling the more “fun” maintenance like trans fluid and filter change.
