Yeah at 50F I doubt it got out of the 190’s. We drove from Michigan to Florida and back last year and I monitored it pretty much the entire time and never saw 200F that’s with the wife, dog and me plus a bed and back seat full of crap?. It takes a major effort to get it into the range that Ford requires.
We were pretty loaded up too. I guess I’ll check the temps via OBD Link MX+ when we get home tonight after another 2 hr drive. I’ll report back.

Perhaps I’ll be selling the ScanGauge. I need to research the capabilities - but, I just jumped on the holidays sales while I could and they were $300+ everywhere else.

Although the manual calls out for over 200 deg, unless you are putting the transmission under a load , it’s going to be rare to actually hit those temps.
The transmission is going to match engine coolant temps, so as long as the engine is fully warmed up to normal operating temp and you have cycled through the gears - the level (between 4 & 5) will be what you want, I doubt anything hotter than 195 is going to move the fluid level much on the dipstick to really make a substantial difference.

Agree.....with my Scan Gauge 3 I've very very rarely hit above 195 with normal driving. Even after 30-40 miles at speeds of 40-70 mph.
Only times it has hit 200 or a bit more is when towing our travel trailer, and even on a warm day it still takes 20-30 miles for it to hit the 195 degree temps.

195 on mine will read around 5 and maybe a tick towards the 6 side. 205 will read easily 4.5 and 212 was almost to 4. I have done a few times via “stress” driving it and towing heavy. If your checking it at 195 and it’s around 5 you should be good and not adding to get it to 4.5 or 4 based on my experience

I haven't had time yet to get to mine in the Ranger, but I might see if it will fit in my Bronco first. No guarantees, I haven't had a lot of time lately.

Merry Christmas Everyone!
I wish it would, but it will not fit anything but a 2.3 Ranger!

That will probably be my next project though!

But not until I have a pile of Ranger sticks sitting around.

Speaking of dipsticks, now that Christmas is in the books, I can get back to work in the shop, PM's going out soon!

I'm part way on this group, should only be a few days.

Damn. You were right. By the time I realized the OBDLink app doesn’t have Trans Temp - I found Car Scanner worked well and it was already at 188°F.

So, what’s the best method for changing a pan in the middle of winter? Get it to 190°F and fill to 4? Check it again in a few months?

Thanks for the advice and sharing your experience. So, perhaps my fluid was just right anyhow.

Where is the factory sensor located? Is there any benefit of installing one in the pan and getting that reading?

Edit: wrote that before reading the last few posts. Guess I’ll be planning that drain/fill/pan swap sooner rather than later.

I got a Mishimoto deep trans pan for Christmas, I want to put it on but my trans is acting up so badly now I am going to take it to the dealer before I install the pan.

I guess I will be the first guy to see what the dealer reaction is to the dipstick  fortunately I worked at this dealer for 13 years... but that was 22 years ago, but the advisor is still like buddy after all these years.

From what I understand, the trans temp is a sensor that feeds the info to the PCM. It's accurate so no need to add a separate sensor if you have a scanner or Scan Gauge 3 or something similar.

Had to get customer service for the trans temp code for my ScanGuage 2 in the fall of ‘21, but I posted the code on the forum. It works well.

Thats the nice thing about the Scan 3....trans temp is already one of the included parameters.
