To piggy back off Richards @Synfulz thread Toyota is working on a Solid State EV battery. It could get up to 900 miles with a 10 minute charge time! This would be a huge game changer and even make me a believer if this happens. But, they (actually all the manufacturers) need to have their trucks with this and have longer ranges and not just for everyday driving but towing/hauling too.

Toyota just unveiled plans for new electric vehicle battery technology that could offer up to 900 miles of driving range, and many are calling it a potential game-changer.

Toyota’s innovations in solid-state batteries are big news for the company and the planet. The new technology will save both time and money for consumers in the form of lower prices and less time at charging stations. Greater range will help absolverange anxiety for potential customers interested in EVs, making these cars more suitable for cross-country travel while charging infrastructure catches up.

At a recent briefing, the company announced big news about new solid-state EV battery tech. Saying it simplified productionof the material used to make solid-state batteries, the company plans to roll out a model by 2025 that will extend cruising range by 20%.

Solid-state batteries (as opposed to lithium-ion batteries, which use a liquid electrolyte) are regarded as a potential turning point for EVs. They have the power to reduce charging times, increase capacity, and reduce fire risk.

The company will also offer two next-gen battery types in 2026 and 2027 — referred to as “performance” and “popularized.” The performance version will use the same battery chemistry as the bZ4X SUV but will offer 20% more driving range. Plus, it will cost 20% less. The popularized version will have the same gains in driving range but at a 40% cost reduction.

I think EV's are right for some people, like those who live in places where it takes an hour to drive 5 miles, but not for everyone.
I disagree with the government incentivizing people to buy EV's and penalizing those who buy ICE's.
Range and charging times are the big issues for me. Again, the way it is now is fine for some people but not for everyone. If they can fix that, it's a huge step toward general acceptance.
The electricity to charge the batteries still has to come from someplace though and that place ain't wind and solar.

I hope Toyota really has made this big breakthrough but I will be skeptical until it is revealed and the performance matches the hype.
I have more faith in Toyota being able to do this than all the others. I think Tesla would be the only other that has the capability right now too. It's a step in the right direction which is positive news for a change.

The whole auto industry sadly is subsidized now from bailouts to extremely high loans which most never get paid back. As far as the grid goes I'm guessing the govt has big plans for that. As far as it stands now there's no way it could handle this much juice going into hundreds/thousands of vehicles without it effecting household customers during peak hours.

My understanding of electrical things is pretty much limited to amps x volts = watts, I think. But, to me, there's no way enough energy to move a vehicle 900 miles or even 500 miles could be transferred into a battery in 10 minutes. My mind is conjuring up images of melting wires, for sure.

Charging is the elephant in the room. Just down the road is an apartment complex. Pretty sure the apartment owners aren't going to install a hundred or more chargers. Condos with no or single car garages. Lots of logistics to be worked out.

It will be a giant step forward, but manufacturers also needs to lessen the risk of chemical battery fires.

Even then I worry about the unexpected issues like how to get out if going into water and shorting out the system. Manual ways to exit the vehicle in case of emergency.

Then minimizing the possibility of electrocuting yourself when working on one. Then actually being able to work on one. Manufacturers are increasingly resistant to shade tree mechanics.

Then there are the privacy and remote control issues. That issue is big in modern ICE autos, but much more of a threat in EVs.

I'd give toyota 5 out of a possible 10 Jim Farley hood pats. As the article points out toyota frequently misses timeliness, numerous companies are chasing break throughs in solid state batteries. Meanwhile anybody heard anything regards the ford/Chinese joint venture lithium ion plant in Michigan? A break thru in solid state batteries could quickly render lith-ion obsolete.

You need to think outside the box. These will be handed out at the next HOA meeting.

They can't get the Prius to gain more than 3 mpg in 30 years but they're going to do this huh? I would still rather have a 70+mpg car like the old Honda Insight before getting another cutting edge unproven tech that maybe sets me on fire.

EVs can't even get off container ship before catching on fire.

The fire must have been caused by a crewman tossing a cigarette......I mean who would ever think that a lithium battery, much less several thousand, would ever ignite, causing a fire ?????
