Not a great start for the 2023 year now is it? Ford vehicle's accounted for roughly 25% of the total number of vehicles recalled so far in 2023. Wow, those are not good numbers. lol What ever happened to "Quality Is Job #1"????‍♂

These days, it seems like we’re reporting on a new vehicle recall every week. In the past month alone, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has shared recall notices for everything from Dodge pickup trucks to Nissan EVs and everything in between. But so far in 2023, there has been one manufacturer that’s been hit with more recalls than any other: Ford.

According to a new report from Automotive News, the Blue Oval has topped the list of automotive recalls so far in 2023 after issuing orders across 31 different models. Recalls issued in the first half of this year have covered cars like the all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck and the Ford Fusion, which was affected by an issue with its brake hoses.

Ford’s 4.1 million recalled vehicles accounted for roughly a quarter of the total number of vehicles recalled so far in 2023. Over the first six months of the year, 515 different models have been recalled, accounting for 16.7 million vehicles.

More promises. Seems like this is where the problem lies.

To try and knock itself from the top spot in this particular title, Ford says it is working to clean up its act and address such quality issues. At the end of 2022, Ford boss Jim Farley said that fixing quality issues was his “No. 1 priority,” but warned that getting the automaker back on the right track could “take several years.”

I just got around to checking my lugs for that recall  .

I was messing with my R32 this weekend in preparation for its "rental duty" while the Ranger is getting fixed, I had the wheels off so when they went back on I busted out my torque wrench. When I was done I thought, now would be a good time to check the Ranger...and of course there were a couple that needed tightening .

On the bright side though the F150 outsold the competition so far this year 2 to 1. That’s all the competition combined sales. Hopefully they don’t screw that up or by, by Farley!

Pure recall volume is a weird metric to go off of, I'd like to see it compared to the total number of vehicles Ford is producing against its competitors. Is the rate of recalls exceeding that of other manufacturers, or is Ford just producing a lot of cars?

Agreed. Some of the recalls were to tighten lug nuts. I had one on my fusion to check the steering wheel bolt for tightness. While potentially dangerous I prefer these to the notices to park outside because your new vehicle could catch fire an burn your house down. I don't recall the specifics but GM had a recall or two where they said NOT TO DRIVE the vehicle. They would send a tow truck for it.

To paraphrase my favorite sign from the 1950s: Quality must be built into a product. It cannot be recalled into it.

A sure sign of quality dropping.
Whether its Ford themselves, or a supplier, they need to get their sh*t in order.
A better comparison of numbers would help determine the full scope, but its still not good news if you're printer is pumping out recalls every couple hours.
