Why did you pick the Ranger over the Tacoma?

I have always been a Ford guy, my first real job was washing cars at a Ford dealer:crackup:

Besides I have no respect for Toyota as a company, actually the racing division, TRD, so I would never buy one no matter awesome it was.

Tacoma seating position felt like a go-kart with my arse on the floor and feet out in front. Hurt my knees. Dashboard looked like a go-kart dashboard. Felt like it was meant for a younger person. But the Ranger really spoke to me and since it is my third Ranger, it's no wonder why.

I always call TRD a TuRD.
Thank God the wife's Supra has the Gazoo Racing emblem on the back and not some TRD sticker.

First off, I am a Ford guy, so that was a factor. But honestly I sat in 2 Taco's at an auto show and despite making multiple adjustments to the drivers seat I found it very uncomfrtable. To me, being a taller and larger guy, I found the seat sat too low to the floor of the cab and also the lower seat was too short, hitting me at an odd spot on my legs. One of the Tacos was a more base model, and one was a top line, but result was the same. At that show I actually sat in several small trucks, including the Frontier and the Canyon. Frontier was not bod to sit in, the Canyon was terrible just like the Taco. As others have mentioned, the higher power ratings and better fuel mileage sealed the deal for the Ranger for me. I am seeing between 21-22 mpg in commuter driving using 89 octane fuel. I was seeing 20-21 on regular 87 octane. So far very pleased with the Ranger as I approach 60k miles.

I've owned both in the past and was happy with both except for the gas mileage on the Tacoma. I have always driven Fords except for two strays. A 1983 Chevy S-10 (biggest piece of junk I've ever had) and an 80's Tacoma. Traded the S-10 for my first Ranger.
Fuel mileage between the two was somewhat of a concern to me, but I'm glad I didn't too much emphasis on it. The Ranger with the factory BF Goodrich's AT's were basically a summer tire, and gave me great mileage. Then I put KO2s on it and I bet I get worse mileage with them than a Tacoma with the same tire. (KO2s are their factory tire). And it most definitely lost its pep and great acceleration. I feel like I'm driving a Ford Tacoma now lol.
People always talked about tires change the vehicle, now I know its true.

When I was looking for a new truck, I did my best to do an independent evaluation to find the best fit for what I wanted/needed. The two I seriously considered was the Ranger and the Tacoma. While there were things I liked about the Tacoma, the one thing I just could not get past was the horrible drivetrain - it was miserable. I really, really wanted to like it, but that drivetrain soured me on the entire truck. I put in an order kind of on faith for a 5G Ranger before I could even test drive one (it is my 4th Ranger). About a month after I ordered, I was able to test drive one at a local dealer and I knew I made a good decision. Coming up on 4 years now (in April) and if I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. This truck continues to impress me and has performed flawlessly for me, doing everything I've asked of it and then some.

Trying to convince my boy to get a Ranger like I did, he just won’t listen to me lol so I turned to you guys. The Tacos are just too expensive for what they have to offer compared to the Ranger 5G

Powertrain!

67% more gears than the Tacoma, the 10R80 is probably the best Trans on the market right now in any mass produced vehicle.

For 30k I could have got a 4cyl 4 door Tacoma 2wd.

Or at 30k a Ranger 4 door with 100 more HP with an E-Locker and better MPG’s.

I am a fan of Toyota as I do have 2019 Rav4 hybrid. I’d say the one advantage of the Tacoma would be resale value, as the Toyota cult keeps the resale value strong.

But the Focus RS based engine, 10R80, Locker, 4 door combo for 30k is unbeatable IMO.

I had a 2018 TRD off road 4runner before the ranger. I wanted to upgrade into something that had a small bed, could tow better... I didn't want the truck version of my 4runner. The v6 really isn't that bad, what hurts is the gearing- It's always too high or too low.

That is easy: the Ranger has more power, gets better gas mileage, has a higher payload rating, has a higher towing capacity and comparably equiped cost less. Plus I think the Ranger is better looking.
Wait! You can't say that!

It's obvious that on paper the Tacoma has a roaring 278HP compared to the Ranger's wimpy 270HP!

I'm done with Japanese cars. they really aren't as awesome as some people want you to believe. who are they trying to convince?
There used to be a large delta in quality/reliability between Japanese and other cars.

That is mostly gone now but some hold on to it.

I really wanted the Tacoma because I think it looks better than the Ranger, although the Ranger is not a bad looking truck, I just think the Tacoma looks better.

What sealed the deal in favor of the Ranger was the performance and the capability. Payload is still good even with the Tremor package unlike in the Tacoma. The TRD Off road I was looking at only had around 1,100 lbs. of payload capacity. Felt really slow on my test drive, I could only imagine how much slower it would be when loaded or towing a trailer.

I've owned mostly ford's, but I had a tacoma in high school that I loved. So, when I needed to downsize, I started there. I forgot that for in and around town driving, the Taco is ok compared to longer commutes, and I could ignore the bad seats because I had no other option in high school. So, I searched for anything around 36k with 4 wheel drive and a decent entertainment system and lucked upon a brand new tremor heavily discounted. So, it made the decision easy. Once I test drove it, I knew it was the best choice. Easy to get in and out of and just enough power to tow.

I give Toyota as a whole a huge edge over Ford as it pertains to marketing and TV ads, like the latest Tacoma ad showing the gal driving her old Tacoma home to visit her dad, presumably it had been his. But the ads aren't even that good to have me consider a Tacoma, not to diss Jan but have to give Lilly the edge, and make that a very large edge in certain areas.
Now if Lilly was a Toyota pitch women it may have been a much more difficult decision.
