dealers dont want to "deal" with you if finance is not done by them. a few dealers in my area dont even wanna talk to you unless your going to finance with berkshire hathaway. i worked sales for a while and feel two types of dealers exist. one type is the high volume seller that wants any workable deal. the other type is what most seem to be - the milk every drop dry hump type that snipe customers.

I dealt with one of the bigger Ford dealers in the area here and over the phone put a deposit on the 21 Ranger Lariat I was interested in. This was at the end of Dec. of 21, they first tried 3k over msrp, then 2k, then 1k but settled for msrp. The next day I get a phone call from the salesman saying it was already sold. They offered me a similar 21 lariat with an offroad and blackout package I didn't want but it had eveything else I wanted. I was pissed to say the least and told not only the salesman but the sales manager that I didn't believe for a minute their bs story it was sold. I told them they sold it to someone who was paying over msrp and they were full of sh*t. They offered me 1.5k of msrp for this vehicle so I reluctantly took the deal. I told them I wanted to buy thru Ford so the finance guy writes it up and just before I sign the docs I ask is this thru Ford credit. You should of seen his appalled face when I demanded I wanted Ford credit and not their finance deal whom I'm sure gives them a kickback. I could tell he wasn't happy and this made me feel real good. And yes I removed this dealers ford dealer badge. I will never go back to this dealer not even for a few free oil changes they include with the purchase. I also told the salesman, who unfortunetly was a nice older gentleman,do not send me a survey as they will not be happy with the answers. I received the survey but I just couldn't fill it out because I was still totally pissed off and the nice salesman told me the dealership would take it out on him, and guess what he is right because my former job had cust. surveys and you were rated on these surveys.
The moral of the story is alot of these dealers don't give a hoot about honor these days especially with these supply shortages and delivery problems!!!!

Supply and demand, which the market favors the dealer over the customer as of right now and they know it. Even the used market is in the dealers favor. Reminds of the old phrase "The House always wins."

It used to be when you drove onto a dealer lot and got out to check out vehicles, it wouldn't take a full minute before a salesperson approached you. That, to me, is annoying. I have to say, I actually enjoyed my last purchase experience (the Ranger back in March). I searched the whole metro area from my couch. I also was able to let time pass to get a feel for how fast (or not) inventory was moving. By the time I was ready to buy, there really wasn't much to talk about.
As we move into the EV world, this model will change more to a Telsa online Metaverse experience, without having to deal with real salespeople. It's coming folks. I'll just say I have solid insights.

Salespeople are becoming extinct. When I worked for Bridgestone Retail Operations under their "Tires Plus" Brand. I was laughed at for pointing out that we were not needed. This was right before McDonald's started using order kiosks in their stores. I said that we could get replaced by a kiosk. Customer comes in types up what they want, kiosk does a preprogrammed upsale attempt and done. Only people needed is a service manager who can also be store manager to talk with customers over large issues and techs to work on the cars.

I bought 2 new vehicles from Norm at Liberty Ford here in Vermillion. Great guy if anyone is in the area. They only negative is everyone loves him an I had to wait my turn to see him. He had a customer in his office one sitting outside an me doing test drives waiting on him. Only problem is they have a small lot an don't have the inventory of where I bought my ranger. They do have 5 locations but waiting on transferring one is a pain and a delay.

Norm knows every feature and option of every model they sell. He goes through the car with you shows you everything an syncs your phone an all that before you drive away.

He leaves the walk ins to the young guys he has such a large customer base he pretty much only does repeat buyers and referrals (unless the kids are slow to help a customer).

look for the old guy that's been there forever. He's still there for a reason.

OK, the two of you consider this your official warning. No more sniping - additional instances will result in a vacation from the forum.

So being old and crusty, I've lowered my expectations for most things post-pandemic. As someone that can easily afford a Ranger, I have a dealer that just doesn't feel I'm worthy enough for them to bother with me and simply doesn't respond back when I've inquired about several vehicles. Sure, I know the typical response: "so what, move on and find another dealer". I agree with this sentiment and have no problem doing so, but maybe someone can help me understand the utter lack of any courtesy whatsoever. Mind you, I've already been the dealer twice and have test rode some vehicles. Two different salesmen won't respond to me. Odd or am I just old?
Trash their ass on Social Media - repeatedly and often!! They may not respond, or, they may delete it. This goes on the predication that they have a social media presence.

You can also bitch to BBB. Even if they are not a registered user of the service, you can still file complaints against them I think.

Maybe even look at LinkedIn. It's like social media for business (kind of).

Can always do Yelp or google reviews too I think. Whatever and wherever you can, tell everyone how crappy they are to their potential customers....

My Dealer has a Fleet Manager. I have dealt with him for many many years and several vehicles. He is quick to respond. No haggling. Pick what I want and he walks me around to everyone. It's just a matter of developing a relationship. Any time I walk in someone calls me by name. Maybe I'm lucky....

Back in 2018 when I was preparing to order my Ranger I was surprised at how many dealerships had no interest in ordering a vehicle for me. I thought it was easy and a guaranteed sale, even though it was out in the future. Seemed really weird to me.
yeah, this isn't a covid thing--dealerships couldn't/wouldn't sell rangers before all that stuff started. I assume it's because it's easier to just wait for the next guy to come in looking for an F150 rather than dealing with an oddball. I pity ford being stuck having to use ford dealers to sell fords.

The dealer already a host of really shitty reviews. Nothing more I need to do. Some of the reviews are downright nasty. Glad I steered clear.

I was in an accident an had to get a rental. I was looking around for where to get one an the closest one to me had horrible reviews. I wasn't paying so I went there anyway an had a great experience. I stopped looking at yelp an google reviews because I figure you only hear from the handful that had a bad experience an not the majority that had a good one. No one goes out of their way to post a complement. In the car rental case there were only about a dozen reviews but no one bothered to post a positive one....even me lol

Yes and no, the last thing you want to do as a salesman is order a vehicle for the customer. You sell sell sell what is on the lot first before going the route of ordering. If anything a good dealer will do a dealer trade to get what you want before ordering.

IMO a good dealer should do what the customer wants, not what the dealer wants. If the customer wants to order a vehicle, the dealer should order a vehicle. A dealer trade could be an OPTION (if they can find a vehicle with exactly what the customer wants), but it shouldn't be the ONLY option, IMO.
