But they were such a pain to get in and shim so that the tonneau rails didn't dip inward. They still do a little on the driver side so I'm hoping that more clamps with shims on each will help keep it level.

A semi-determined thief would do best by not trying to break the tonneau latch system but simply pry the tonneau rails up. Even with the clamps tight, the plastic of the bed rail caps is slick and the rails can be moved up with a bit of force.

LOL, always something that I can work myself up to worry about! =D
For me a semi sharp knife would by-pass any security I need for my bed. My front rails sit fine but as you go down they sink below the bed sides.. Pisses me off to no end.

Not sure why ford left such gaps between the plastic and lip of the bed rail.... Afterthought Idea I guess.

As I continue to "wing it" with this inverter project, my dc-to-dc charger and modified marine box arrived.
20220905_120929.jpg

My two main routes:
20220905_115023.jpg
20220905_115228.jpg

Now I'm at a crossroads and not sure with way to go. With the size of the charger and inverter, I have an all-in-one solution with the larger plano box. I would outfit the top with 12v, USB, and 120v outlets and charge ports for connecting an array of charging options (12vdc for the dc2dc, 120ac to 12vdc, and solar, possibly all wired to a rotary selector switch for full isolation from each other). That said, the foot print is larger than I wanted for just one battery.

Second option is more modular. Use the smaller battery box and mount the dc2dc charger and inverter on the side wall of my bed (thinking builtright molle panels down the line) and have the smaller battery box tucked out of the way behind the wheel well... I could then order a second battery and basic marine battery box- by adding an anderson plug and make a 6ft jumper, double my ampacity running the two in parallel, and have them both tucked against driver and passenger side out of the way.

Only concern would be having the charger and inverter mounted right under the edge of the tonneau cover and the possibility of them getting water in/on them.

As a bed rack and RTT are still far out additons on this project, I'd contemplated purchasing the truck bed tent (fordpass points maybe?) and air mattress by Napier in the mean time, so something tighter to the side walls was a consideration with that in mind.

Choices?...

Any thoughts, suggestions or similar setups to what I just described? Thanks!
I am always impressed and inspired by the folks on here when it comes to any of their electrical or electronic mods. I also wouldn’t have the slightest idea of where to start on any of these probjects. I take one look at their setups and all I see is this…

Kudos to those who tackle these mods!

That gap's messing with me too! And that gap doesn't seem to be uniform—wider in some places and narrow in others and different from side to side.

The shim material is that rubber material with adhesive on one side and sliding that in has been a pain. Trying to spread open that gap and shove this stuff in is frustrating. I need to explore at the hardware store for a similar rubber shim without glue on it that will create some friction when clamped but also be able to slide it in.

I suppose if that's my biggest gripe in life, I have a pretty charmed life! =D

I've been looking through amazon for shims (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=flat+shims&ref=nb_sb_noss)

But I really don't want to spend any more money on this stupid thing so I may find random crap around the house to gerry rig as shims..

I have plenty of plastic knives I can snap in half.....

Thanks for the link, I had see Wobble Washers (but not the link with all the sizes) and it seems like they are only hard plastic.

I was thinking of slicing up an old inner tube and gluing layers together as needed, still a PIA though ...

LOL, I had actually considered using normal wood shims, they ought to last a long time under that plastic bed rail cap.

Yeah so did I, but wood absorbs moisture and figure over time they'll probably rub through paint by expanding and contracting as wood does.

Ugh, like you, I don't want to order crap that I'll just mostly toss out.

Here's rubber (neoprene) but it's a massive amount and $15 (what a waste for something that should be far simpler to accomplish).

Hmm, this made me think of just cutting up some "jar gripper" things we have, that may work! *desperation kicks in*

Crud, and then rust, bah!

I'll futz with the adhesive stuff I still have from Bak, cuss a lot, get sore knees, and eventually get it done, but what a pain. I just want those rails to be more solid feeling and not worry if someone sits on the bed rail.

It's a pickup truck and you should be able to sit and step on the rails! :explode:

If I went that route, I could fashion some vibration dampening on my computer and make some knee pads or some ish.

Maybe even finish the inner wheel well.

Well, the build quality of this truck leaves much to be desired, despite what some here say.

I have a hump on my bed side where the clamp is located, it tweaked the bed rail

Only time I had the rail come off was at the DUMP when I drug out a queen size mattress. Argh!

*At least no damper lights on dashboard.
Dang, you're quite the stud! =p

I was also thinking about studded tires, although I've never used them, and grew up in Canada when all cars and trucks were only rear wheel drive and I never had any problems (knock on wood!).

PS - Those look like really big tires!!!
