I always remember when my father in law got a brand new taco in 2012 and asked if my f150 got 14mpg. I laughed and said I hit 21 on road trips why what do you get. After a small pause he said 17-18.

It might be reliable but American auto manufacturers can make a solid full size pickup. Now if we had the hilux in America with the diesel all bets are off. I would take one of those.
Hilux is not a whole lot better, Toyota just finalised a $2 billion class action for DPF failures in the Hilux here in Australia

Any truck is better than no truck , but I am now and forever spoiled on "pep" and this Ranger has set the bar for all future test drives , IF there is a next truck, JUST ABOUT 2 HOURS AGO , I left in it to meet wifey at Casino , since I was on my own , I decided to take the "back way" over versus the interstate, probably 15 miles of very rural , narrow WV roads , 2 nice , long steep hills on the way over, Sport all the way ... this damn truck feels like a 2 stroke dirt bike ! , absolute beast ripping uphill , even at the edge of breaking loose , it still feels solid inside , can't go back to anything less, not now that I've tasted it...

yuuup i did rebuild the front end but wheeling with jeeps with 37s and running 34s puts a lot of abuse on the front end but you wouldnt know that would you lmao
Wow that's badass dude, putting on big tires is hardcore. I wanted to do the same but can't afford the 50k worth of test and hgh needed to handle it.

I had to put a steel plate across the tailgate to load up my bike without the thing denting in. The tailgate is like some exoskeleton cause they were chasing weight reduction and mpgs. They make these in the aftermarket too, why if its not a problem? Visibility was terrible with that stupid handle. Looked like this. My older Ranger with a 4cyl was a much better truck. I didn't care about it being slow so much (my Ranger was all of maybe 90hp) but that 4 speed trans was always in last gear and never wanted to downshift. Actually the new Ranger does kinda the same thing but we have sport mode at least which makes it drive like a regular truck used to.

lmao i never had an issue with my tailgate ive loaded dirtbikes, atvs, and lots of other odds and ends back there no issues i know loads of people with em and nobody has dented the tailgate... with loading stuff in it... and i can guarantee you standing on it wont damage it.. noooow if you weigh a metric ton then ya you gonna bend it....

as stated i drove mine for years and that handle was never in the way so idk how it was an issue with you unless you are taller? i know a few people that are closer to 6'4" have that issue but most under dont really have an issue to my knowledge..

the trans on the tacoma is also good on the 2nd gens i know many with well over 300k miles and hard abuse and they dont search for gears unleesssss you are running 35s-37s and not regearing... sadly yes people do that then ask why is it so slow or why does the transmission search all over!?

mpg sucked not gonna lie but at the same time we drive trucks.... sure the ranger gets pretty darn good mpg but its still a truck so its mpg is alright but for a truck its pretty damn good! my tacoma got roughly 12mpg when it ran 34s and had full armor on it when i had 32s the truck got cose to 18 ish but i also drove fast in it so my mpg was usually at 16-17s but i also never care about mpg to much ill be honest...

now for you saying the ranger was a better truck? ehhhh thats for the eye of the beholder.... because unless you had the twin i beam suspension i dont see anything good about the old rangers but thats me i dont care for really any ford besides this gen ranger, the raptor (i mean i cant say i dont like em they are sick!) and the 1st gen bronco and current gen bronco and the gt40... a mustang or two but thats it...

buuut this is also a ford forum and i see lots of fanboys here and i see the fanboys on the Toyotas side as well (yup still on those forums and i also defend this gen ranger because well i do like it) some see me as a traitor with owning a ford now which is pretty funny to me lol.

Not sure they were comparing old Tacos to old Rangers. My OP was comparing new Tacos with new Rangers. Big difference.

oh i know what you are talking about we are talking about his old truck a preface lift 2nd gen and my facelift 2nd gen

we never compared the old ranger or older tacoma he just stated it was a better truck in his mind which to him it might very well be

ive driven all the midsize trucks on the market and loved how the ford was for lots of things! is the truck technically dated? ya a bit but overall its an awesome little truck and the only reason i wanted a 3rd gen was my suspension i just got for my truck would work on it plus i wanted a manual buuut wasnt worth it in the end plus i dont really like the 3rd gens looks tbh its just eh? i like how the ranger looks it gives me an Australian or overseas vibe which i dig

Buddy of mine has a 2019 Tacoma TRD off road with manual trans. Stock, no mods. Seating position is different, but truck rides as good as the Tremor. The V6 in the Tacoma lacks low end torque, but shift at 3k rpm and it's no snail. It's a different truck with small issues of its own just like every other manufacturer's.

Rode in a friend's 2022 Taco Saturday. It was meh at best. The seats were too cushy. The center display was just weird. He complained about the adaptive cruise control saying he always turns it off. And when he got on the throttle there was a lot of noise but little acceleration. I seriously doubt he even considered a Ranger. One step on the throttle could have changed his mind.
But the resale value!

Maybe that was my issue. Being 450lbs would bend the tailgate and also make the truck very slow. By the time I got the ranger I had already been on The Biggest Loser twice so I suppose that could make the ranger faster.
