I've got a 2019 Ranger Lariat that I use to tow a 4,500 lb travel trailer. Now time to replace original Hankooks, which I wasn't happy with. I do no off roading. Looking for tires that will perform well all around, but especially in rain.

Interested in what other people are using. Thinking of Michelin Defender LTX M/S or Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S.

Thanks in advance, Mark

What type of tire to choose is complicating, and certainly proves the axiom, "one shoe certainly doesn't fit them all. " If towing, I believe you need a higher ply tire for sidewall support, rather than the standard 4 ply. Problem is, when not towing, the higher ply will give a rough ride. The Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S are 4 ply, (SL designation). The 4S in the Cooper means, "Four season." These Coopers have a 65K warranty. The Michelin Defender LTX M/S is also a 4 ply tire (SL), and has a more of a passenger looking tread- which means quiet ride; good gas mileage; good in wet or dry pavement; and will last longer. The Michelin's are good for 70K miles. Also take into consideration your snow challenges, as you would in the New England area. I have OEM Hankook ATMs (265 65 R17), but I do not have the LT designation (Light truck) and no snow here & I don't tow. Right now I'm keeping my eye out on the newest Hankook- the Dynapro AT2 xtreme- which is so new there aren't many reviews out there, and Discount Tire doesn't carry them yet- but Tire Rack does. (https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tire...odel=Dynapro AT2 Xtreme&partnum=665TR7RF12RWL)
LONG STORY SHORT: check into whether the number of ply makes a difference for towing.

My opinion for what's worth:
Both the Michelin and Cooper's max load rating are the same and the retail cost is about the same. For no off roading, I would go with the Michelins.

I've got the Cooper AT3s on my YJ. I thought about them for the Ranger but they were on backorder in my size at the time 255/80 R17.

The Heep is much lighter, and very much lower on torque than the Ranger and I've only put a couple of thousand on the Coopers. But these are nice tires. Very quiet for as aggressive as they are, and there don't seem to be any wear/balance issues.

I know you don't offroad, but the Coppers will perform much better than the Michelins if you get yourself into an unplanned situation.

I think that the Michelins would prove to be slightly better for on road handling, but I would prefer the load carrying capability of the LT Coopers if I towed regularly like you.

I have the Coopers and I like them, but if you’re 100% on pavement I may lean to the Michelins. They are likely a better riding highway tire overall. The Coopers ride nice but they are a bit louder than the Hankooks in my experience. I cross shopped these when I bought the Coopers and Im pretty sure you can get the Michelins in an LT load rating if you jump up to 265/70. Likewise, you would have to get the Cooper AT3 LT vs. AT3 4s if you want a LT rated tire. Both brands are good and will serve you well.

I had the Michelin on an Nissan Armada and they were really good on-road tires. The treadwear on those was amazing and they were so quiet.

The only caveat with Michelin tires is that you can't let the truck sit for too long or the tires will crack and dry rot. They need to roll and are notorious for that.

I got the Coopers about two months ago and like them. For straight highway it's hard to beat Michelins though. I don't off-road anymore but I need rain and snow performance and I think the Coopers would be better for winter. They're quiet for an A/T and it's like the rain isn't even there.

Starting to call around for pricing. Dealer quoted me a price for 4-wheel alignment ... Ranger has solid rear axle ... is there even anything to measure???

Why do you think your truck needs an alignment?

I'm putting new tires on after 49k miles/3 years and it's never had the alignment checked.
Your truck and money but if you have never altered the suspension and never drove though a deep pot-hole or drove over a curb and the tire wear on the old tires looks even, I not sure you need an alignment check at 49k.

I've been researching the best wet weather tire for coastal Oregon and I keep coming back to the Cooper AT3 4S plus they look good and I like the OWL
