Curious why you advised not attaching the GND lead to the NEG terminal on the BATT.
John it's more of a safety issue than anything. Will it work grounded to the negative terminal, yes. Should you ground it there, no. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

good for you.
why are you challenging people by asking the questions then...keep doing you.

I wear safety glasses when i grind things....why? it's not because ive never had something fly off and hit me in the eye, its because the added safety is well worth the effort.
OK, it was you who answered a question that wasn’t directed to you not me.

You know, it appears you just like to argue with people on this forum and for that reason I’m out this conversation with you but I’m confident you’ll be true to yourself and get the last word in.

So both the POS & NEG are permanent connections and the temp connection is the 120 VAC correct?

John, I'm not sure what you mean by Temp connection but the instal instruction from CTEK state this. Hope this helps. :)

For Negative-grounded vehicle, connect POSITIVE (RED) clip from battery charger to POSITIVE
(POS, P, +) ungrounded post of battery. Connect NEGATIVE (BLACK) clip to vehicle chassis or engine block away from battery

To be fair, this is a forum, not a private message. If you don't like open debate, you may want to avoid most of the internet. And just because you don't like the reply, or the person giving it, doesn't mean they're wrong. If you feel you already know the answer, don't ask questions to be disappointed.

Best be thought a fool, than open ones mouth and leave no doubt.

Temp as in temporary. On my Polaris Ranger I have my float charger hard wired at the battery and I mounted an AC outlet to the body where I connect my extension cord. I thought I saw in your pictures you had your AC cord coming out of the front grill area.

Well, to be fair, my question was to AZS as to why he did something a certain way.

Yes I hard wired mine so I didn't have to lift the hood every time I wanted to connect the maintainer by the clips. The charger itself isn't wired into the engine bay it's still remote and plugs into the wall outlet then the lead from the tow hook plugs into the lead from the charger. The longer leads are only for the quick connect lines running to the maintainer. Sorry if what I said earlier was confusing it's been a long week. lol

Here's the link to the CTEK charger and halfway down the page on the left side you'll see the User Manual PDF.

I know I'm late to this conversation, and not wanting to butt in. But, it seems the question that was asked was why the negative charger/maintainer lead was run to a chassis ground and not directly to the battery terminal.

The reason for this is our trucks have a battery management system (BMS). There is a sensor at the negative battery terminal that reads the batteries state of charge. If the maintainer is connected directly to the battery it will bypass this sensor and mess with the system.

So the negative is connected directly to chassis ground. So I don’t buy that. I think it’s more for using clip leads to avoid creating a spark at the battery to prevent explosion. Permanent install will not create spark at the battery so there should be no issue installing on both posts.

The reason has nothing to do with sparks. It is all about the BMS sensing any change in the charge of the battery. By connting the maintainer directly to battery terminals you bypass the sensor and system does not see the charge being added to the battery. The system even keeps track of the inservice time of the battery and needs to be reset if you change the battery.

I guess we should try to agree to disagree.

Heck what do I know? I’m only an electronic design engineer for the past 40 years and I only design missile test systems now. Yeah I know not the same.
