8K jobs cut........not good!
Usually this is done through attrition and retirement. As people leave naturally, the positions are't refilled. To make it happen faster, various contract/agreement buyouts are used. Most are from Ford Blue, the ICE division of Ford. This tells me that there aren't any more ICE engines coming after the 6.8 V8.

IMHO these will becoming from the ICE Powertrain Engineering, which have not been designing anything new for probably the last five years. The last big launch was the 10R and 8F drivelines and after that they would only be working on improvements and slight changes for newer applications. Most of them have been with Ford a long time and would be in the range for retirement packages anyway.
As much as I see all the comments about EV, it is the future and a whole different set of engineering is required. Any automotive company thinking the status quo of existing ICE knowledge will carry them forward are in for a wake up call.

Say what you want but ICE will be around for a lot longer than many think. At least 20 years more if not longer. There is no way the infrastructure can be built up to the levels needed before that. We don’t have that much copper mined even if you ripped the copper pipes out of everyone’s house to do it!

The Texas grid is barely keeping up with the demand from A/C's right now. Hope they can increase capacity before ICEs are not being sold...

EVs make me think of the cloud computing hype. The cloud is just someone else's server. EVs still burn the same fuel, just somewhere else*

*Unless you actually get power from a renewable in your area. I'm also being a bit of a shit. I know it's more complicated than that.

So the timing of this thread spells a lot. Just came across this article today.

LA TIMES – Rivian Automotive Inc. is planning hundreds of layoffs to trim its workforce in areas where the electric-vehicle maker has grown too quickly, according to people familiar with the matter. […] The Irvine company, which has more than 14,000 employees, could target an overall reduction of around 5%, the people said. The layoffs are still in the planning stage, and nothing has been decided.

Think more of this has to do with a recession kicking in and companies preparing to weather the impending storm more than anything else!

I think this has more to do with the current economy, and supply chain than the electric transition.

Ford's sales numbers have declined the last 5 years, with the last 2 being a large decline. And there's no end in sight to their sales problems. At a certain point, you've got to trim the fat.

Has anyone ever even seen a Rivian on road? I never have even in Telsa-riddled NJ. EV vs ICE aside, in this economy you're not going to sell a lot of $70k vehicles.

could well be the predominant factor but might be others when it's a transitory technology involved, recall the big dot com hiring spree by telco companies like QWEST, Level 3, etc. Many hired anyone who could spell "network/cloud" and eventually many were let go and these rising stars forced to retrench and many eventually acquired. Tesla is one company doing a lot of things right in the EV market - still posting healthy sales numbers.

yeah I saw one a short time back parked at a trailhead - color was fatigue green, was a good sized vehicle, high ground clearance, etc.

No able to find the story at the moment.

Recently, a family in the Tampa Bay area bought a 2014 electrified Ford Escort with 60k miles for their 17yo daughter - her first car. In short order, the car began issuing trouble codes to return the car to a Ford dealer ASAP.

Local dealer stated the battery had exceeded its service limit and no batteries were available anywhere. If there was a battery to be had, it was priced at $14,000 plus labor to remove and install.

Curious to know what improvements Ford has made to this situation since then?

I' ve seen exactly one Rivian Pickup truck, two weeks ago in the Denver, NC area. Was quite astonished as I've only seen one Ford Maverick pickup on the road , ever.
