For those not familiar with semis, The very end of the video shows the truck stopped ~100 yards from where he "removed" the trailer's tandems.
  • When the tandems separated from the trailer, the air lines for the brakes were severed. Air brakes are designed to default to fully applied when the air pressure in the system goes below 30 psi, normal operation is 90-120 psi for most rigs, with visual & audible warning at 60 minimum psi (we had ours set at 65psi). He stopped when the tractor brakes applied.
  • The trailer was now sitting on the ground, no air and no possibility for the driver to unhook and drive off.
  • Don't know for sure, but I can imagine a person that far gone trying to drive off with the brakes fully applied and taking out one or both driveshafts and/or burning the clutch and pressure plate up.
  • Tearing out the tandems and subframe that way on a frameless van trailer likely totaled the trailer. I estimate the whole floor is shot, not to mention potential damage to any cargo inside, although the trailer acted like it was empty.
No idea how old the trailer was. New 53' dry vans with air ride suspension (this one had) and composite side walls run $65-$75,000+ depending on other upfitter equipment or features, but they are "cheaper by the dozen."

No doubt this was his/her last day with that company if not in the industry.
