Anyone else frustrated that we haven’t seen a Map update in a while. It seems like I’ve had NA 2 20 for over a year! (Or am I missing something?)

I use waze or google because they are always current and are better in real time IMO. Have never used the built in maps.

I know that’s an option but I prefer the built in system.

Even with the Nav system, to this day, I still use the AAA maps, and whenever we hit a welcome station in another state, I always pick up an up to date freebie map.
On our trips we still carry a Road Atlas with us....just used to old school.

just curious, why?
I find it easier to use a single system. I’ve tried using Waze on my iPhone and just like the built in system better. I guess it’s just what I’m used to.

@Grumpaw might be on to something - I have the 300A package so I’m heading to the AAA Welcome Station for my copy of Maps 1.0

I'm halfway with you.

I keep a Road Atlas on hand for road trips. But I generally plan my routes the night ahead using my phone. On the road I'll use Google maps if I need to navigate somewhere specific but I keep the Atlas around just in case.

Google maps is great for finding out of the way local eateries while traveling in unfamiliar areas.

I grew up with Shell and Texaco maps...they were always free for their customers.
Even remember the old , really old, Camper Travel Guides, where the instructions read "go 2 1/2 miles, turn right at the red barn, and take the right fork.....turn left at Gracie's Diner....."
Of course, that was when "hi tech" meant you had a push button radio instead of a manual tune.

I can tell you why I like the built in system better.

1. I find having to plug in my phone every time I get into the truck just to have nav available is a major inconvenience to me. 99.99% of the time the factory nav gets me to where I am going.
2. Google Maps may be getting updates more often but it still can take over a year for a new road to show up (the only 3 roads built in the last 5 years took over a year before they showed up in Google Maps) . Most of the updates are POI additions.
3. The traffic condition, construction, etc reporting with SirusXM Travel Link that is integrated into the factory nav system is much better than Google Maps.
4. Waze is ok as a navigating app but the promise of user reporting is a joke where I live. There is almost 2 million people in a 30 Mike radius of where I live and almost no Waze users so everything that is reported is either old or trivial. There is no real time reporting of accidents, traffic jams, speed traps, etc.

For me there is no compelling reason to use Android Auto.

In the olden days, I spent a lot of time in Europe. They had these incredible road maps that were folded in a kind of origami like way that took a while to get used to, but after you understood how they worked, it was incredible how efficient they were. I wish I could remember the name of the company that made them.

These days, I always use the iPhone. Sometimes just straight from the phone, sometimes through iTunes when the phone is plugged into the power port in the truck.

I quit using built in maps maybe a decade ago, the whole update thing just never made sense once smart phones were a thing.

My wife (who used to work for Apple), won't let me have Siri on, she doesn't want to be eavesdropped upon, so it is more work setting things up with the phone. No brainer if you are just saying "Hey Siri"...

I love a good paper map. but I really, really appreciate maps through my phone. I've been done dirty by outdated maps loaded onto a device (an old Garmin from before they offered regular updates). even though Garmin and others do offer map updates periodically, I still find sources like Google and Waze (same thing, but they work a little differently) offer better quality maps with better updates and fewer outright errors. That's not to say that they're error-free. Google still has one of the roads leading to my neighborhood mislabeled, in spite of the fact that I've submitted a revision for them to fix it.

and if I need maps where there's no cell signal, then I can use Gaia GPS, and worst case I can fall back onto paper maps.

I don't miss the old AAA Triptick maps. Or trying to navigate with a Delorme state atlas (though these are still great to keep around). Or printing MapQuest directions for a road trip.

I appreciate all the discussion about Waze, Google and paper maps. But back to my original question, why haven’t we received a Ford map update on over a year??

there's a way around that, if you cared to explore it. plugging in is a minor inconvenience for me. I like getting my phone out of my pocket, anyway, so the addition of plugging it in really isn't a big deal. That said, the F150 I drive for work has wireless AA and that is nice (would be better if it had wireless charging, too).

2. Google Maps may be getting updates more often but it still can take over a year for a new road to show up (the only 3 roads built in the last 5 years took over a year before they showed up in Google Maps) . Most of the updates are POI additions.
No maps are perfect. But I appreciate a system that allows for user submissions to get updates out sooner.

3. The traffic condition, construction, etc reporting with SirusXM Travel Link that is integrated into the factory nav system is much better than Google Maps.
You do realize that all these traffic condition reporting systems are all based on the same data, right? The way they report it might differ, but it's all based on cell phone pings.

As with anything that relies on users, it relies on user contributions to make it work the best it can. So if you don't contribute by clearing old reports, adding new ones, and so on, then you're not helping anything.

I think it is pretty close to a year for the over the air update to 2 20. The download came out a couple months later. Hopefully we will get a new one soon. But these maps are always outdated.
