Cabin Air Filters & Engine Filters…

Hey guys …


Been a long time since I’ve owned my own truck and did certain maintenance things on my own … anyone have any suggestions on months or miles for the replacing of each?

I’m in Southern California and run the A/C pretty constant … and use the truck as a daily driver … just FYI.


Any suggestions to brands or when to do these ?

Oh good, another oil question.
Change your oil when the Oil Monitor says to change it or at one year, or no more than 10,000 miles whichever comes first. (Others on here will have different ideas, standby for their input. ) I use the Ford oil filter but I like WIX filters also.

As for the air filter, I would change it at one year. There are some filters that use carbon and for your location, that may be better.

For filter brands I definitely stick with the factory Motorcraft and the Motorcraft filters are really nice. The Only Exception I made was the AEM Engine air filter. Ask for when to do it I've always followed the rule of Engine air filter every 15000 miles along with the cabin air filter. Engine oil and filter I've always gone 5000 miles with the ranger especially using synthetic oil. Just a personal preference but to each their own

If you're keeping the factory intake,stick with the factory air filter.
As for the cabin filter? OEM works, but I'd recommend one of them hepa filters or maybe even a washable filter like K&N offers.



Intervals, hard to say, isn't it typically 20,000 for the engine filter and 12,000-30,000 for the cabin?
I park near a rock crushing plant and the wind here manages to force the dusty air through the snorkel so I have to change a little more often than I like.

Most other owners? Meh 20k-40k or after a year since it can kind of dry rot...

I use WIX for both. Last time it was an issue getting one and had to overpay for a motorcraft one (that also took 3 weeks for the dealer to get).

How often depends. If you don't see dirt roads or off road often what those other guys said.

That's because it's so much easier to get on here (or any forum) and ask the question. Heck I'm guilty of it too as I've never read an owners manual ever, first thing I do is pitch them in my desk draw. Usually I just get online and either do a Google search or jump on a forum and search there. But this subject has been beat to death several times before.

Went to the dealer today to get air and cabin filter. He said the air filters have been in backorder for a while. They actually went and bought a bunch of NAPA Gold filters to use. So that's what i ended up with.

I stumbled across this review recently that seems to be a pretty objective test of engine air filters. Spoiler alert, Wix and Purolater did very well, but K&N was awful for particle filtration as many here have reported.

'Inspect steering linkage, ball joints.... Lubricate any areas with grease fittings'
Do we have grease fittings?
'Fuel and water separator...'
Not on our trucks.
'Inspect air filter restriction gauge...'

Hi Jason,

One of the most tedious tasks is to edit the owner's manual. Tons of legal boiler plate and the assembly by an outside firm. First draft is usually way beyond horrible. Example was driving and care of your Front Wheel Drive Ranger??? WTF? Where did that come from...I called the contact about FWD Ranger...What was she thinking...She said that she did not know the Ranger and thought it might apply....

Being Responsible for the Owner's Manual I just could not read the whole thing and catch the mistakes, so I got some of my folks together and gave then each a section to review and edit. Then I had them swap sections for a second review and edit. Then we assembled it and shipped it off the the company that printed the manuals.. We caught most errors but there were a few that slipped through.... It is a tough job to try to do it right.

It is clear the Ford Vehicle Engineering Manager did a very lousy job on the Ranger, JMO.

Anyway sorry to beat to death… I guess the owners manual tells me a better brand than possibly others too, and I hate beating animals / especially horses ?

Parts dude said they have been on backorder for a while. They just went to the local NAPA and pretty much bought every filter they had. They needed filters for warranty work and couldn't get any. From my basic redneck/caveman search, it looks like the NAPA Gold filters are made by Wix.
