Just picked up a thinkware u1000 4k front and 2K rear camera setup. Now I’m deciding whether to use their backup battery for extended use or do my own and double the reserve power

No need to if you use the ODB cable for your power supply. This way you can just pull the plug out and not have to worry about it running, even in sleep mode it'll still drain the battery (main or back up) over time.

@VTRanger

1 - Thinkware F50, probably don't make those anymore, this in the Ranger.
2 - Some type of cheap Chinese one, not sure what it is, says 'car camera' . This is cheap but it's
in my sports car & I like the videos after autoX or a track day. Most(99%) of people use a gopro for
this but this is good for me as I'm cheap & just adequate on track.
I run the cable along the top edge, inside, then down, under(tied up so feet don't touch) & to 12v outlet.

Garmin 20 in the Ranger. Camera is 8 years old and going strong still.

Garmin 57 in my wife’s Subaru. Nice features like lane departure warning, following too close, speed and photo camera warnings, etc.

Just curious, do you guys take these cams out when you park in public areas? Seems like they would be targets for thieves.

No because another reason for them is to also capture any incidents when you're parked. Someone backing into your truck or even help with someone else's accident. Mine will go into sleep mode and wake up when it detects motion or a hit. It also will record 10 seconds prior to waking up.

I have an $80 one off of Amazon that does both forward facing and in cab recording that's worked well for over a year now. It's nice that I have proof of what I was/wasn't doing if ever accused of something.

Leave in, as AZ says. Also I read they want to add to all cars, this way your completely stuck in the matrix.

BlackVue 900X-2CHPlus from the DashCam Store (Great source). Installed using the Direct-Wire Outlet cord to my house battery eliminating any issues with a dead battery. This and other units do have low voltage cutouts shutting down the system at a set voltage point. My rig sits allot so the power drain issue is addressed with Battery Tenders on both batteries. There is a live view via the WiFi link which I have set up on a Pad, or can be done with a phone as well. Nice unit that uses 2 minute segments for recording, or when in Park Mode, records when the bump sensor settings are met or activity in front of a camera is detected. All wiring in is in headliner or down C pillar to house battery. Care must be exercised in this to not get tangled up in the airbag systems! Agreed, a must with all the nonsense going on out there today... (See YouTube dashcam clips)

I need to get both front and rear facing for my truck. Besides the video while I’m driving, I want to make sure I catch any mishaps while parked. Will you guys please post pics of your systems mounted? I’m weird about wires and clutter.
Thanks

I ran the wires up through the headliner and down the A-pillar. You can only see the power wire, radar module and the rear camera wire at the top.

Ironically I have a Garmin 67W sitting in its box.

I need to install it, but I hate doing electrical and interior work.

Yes I know it is super easy.

Edit: there... I'll hardwire it later.

I placed the dashcam where I can't see it from the driver's seat.

Dave, that motion sensor, does it matter if it’s in front or back? Does it detect 360 degrees or only in the direction it’s pointed? Does it enable both cameras or only one?

Rick it really has to be mounted on the windshield because the cable is very short. If you can find an extension cable (not sure they have one) you could mount it on the rear window.

It puts it into sleep mode so you're barely drawing any power while parked. Once it detects something like a hit or a person walking/driving by it'll wake up and record. It also records 10 seconds prior to waking back up. Yes it works on both the front and rear cameras.

It only detects what's in the field of view of the front and rear cameras, so more like 140 - 180 degrees. If you look back at my pictures (post #3) it covers a pretty wide area just not the sides for obvious reasons.
