Sand around the hole to bare metal, a little Bondo to fill the hole, primer, and stick on the Ford tailgate applique.

That is what I am thinking of doing. I will also stop drill the cracks so they don't expand.

I popped the worst of the dents out today and am now just waiting for the tailgate cover to come in. $312 after shipping from Levittown Ford is still cheaper than paying my insurance deductible. Plus I won't have to worry about rates going up of getting dropped since I had a vehicle totaled two years ago.

Is the tailgate steel or aluminum?

Sorry if it was already asked in the thread.

I skimmed through it and didn't see that question.

Aluminum. Along with the hood and fenders. Doors, roof, and bed is steel.

Then will traditional body repair work on it?

Will Bondo or other dent fillers even stick properly?

My cover plate arrived today from Levittown Ford. I ended up tapping out the dents as best I could. I then stop drilled the two cracks so they won't spread and used some bond over the hole. You can still see a slight crease in the tail gate but it looks a whole lot better now.

That really sucks.... sorry to see it. I'm glad you were able to cover most of it up. I hope you got a new backup camera with the cover. It obviously wasn't working when you were backing up.

I have been an insurance agent for a major national company for over 25 years. You can file the claim, home insurance has nothing to do with car insurance. Rates and cancellation policies are filed and approved by your state department of insurance. Several claims in a short period of time can get you dropped IF they are the same type. There is no cross over between home and auto claims. Roof claims are almost always storm related and usually not held against the client. The math is simple, will your deductible plus increased premium as a result of this at fault accident be more than to fix it yourself. Get a bid and decide. Good luck.
I concur - home and auto policy are completely separate. I had a Crown Vic that I filed three claims on. All three were non-moving accidents while parked. The final was a tree landed on it during a tornado. The same tornado did more than $145K to my home. Insurance was great to work with on both sides. Homeowners' policy covered 90% of home's damage and auto insurance policy paid more than the KBB value. In the end, neither the homeowners or auto premiums went up more than a few percent. And we weren't dropped.
