Hello all,

Looking at street tires… and there really isn’t much for 18in wheels. Does that change for 17 in wheels? Really the best option might be the hankooks or duelers? Just want a pair of tires I can run really hard on road and a pair for off-road. Noticed if there is a slight road imperfection like a slight crack or bump the off road tires will lose slight traction at turns going 60+. Not the best feeling I would like… I get it, “don’t take the turn as fast” but the hankooks actually didn’t have problems on-road probably because they don’t have those deep grooves or as many. The falkens are amazing off-road though, just can’t push them to a fast on road speed for turns.. straightaway, it’s fine hitting limiter.

Maybe looking to purchase a wheel/tire combo for 17 and 18 in wheels..
@Doc what do you use for tires with your time on the strip?

Warm regards,
Brandon
By the way Brandon, if you go with a 265 tire instead of a 255 tire, the truck will be going 1 mile an hour slower than what the speedometer says. That means you're losing warranty mileage. Up until recently, most vehicles showed 2 miles an hour faster than what they actually do. I remember there was a class action lawsuit against Honda for that and Honda lost and to remedy that, they extended everybody's warranty to 70,000 miles from the 36,000 miles because no matter what speed you're going, you're going 1 mile an hour slower and there's just no way to really be able to tell how many miles you're putting on a vehicle. I put the 265 tires on my truck at the recommendation of the assistant manager for Discount Tire said I could do that but he didn't tell me about that 1 mile an hour difference and now they're replacing my tires with the 255s that they finally got in. I'll be doing that over the next day or two.

When you go to a tire with a larger diameter the truck will be going faster than what the speedo shows, not slower.

The above is correct. With the 265/70/17 the speedometer is accurate at 100kmh. Before it was overestimating like any other car. Anyway, with Forscan the tyre size can be changed. No need for one size bigger, yet it would be fair to do for the sake of mileage and a new owner.

FWIW, my Ranger came with 265/70-17 tires. One of the first things I do with a new vehicle is to check the accuracy of the speedo (a little OCD going on). Anyway, the Rangers speedo is correct at every speed up to 70 mph when checked against the GPS in my radar detector and my phone.

I also have 265/70/17's (KO2's). What are the differences between your speedo and your GPS above 70 if you have checked? I do not normally drive above 70 but of course higher than that when passing. I have a Garmin GPS and am interested in knowing how your differences compare to my differences at passing speeds. I haven't compared mine yet but plan to and see if there are any differences between them before and after 70 :)

I appreciate the help Nick! However, as others have mentioned and I did a little tire size calculator and it does mess with the speed a little. With a bigger tire my truck at 265/65/18 vs stock 265/60/18 is 2-3 miles per hour faster at 70 mph. At 85 it gets to about 3-5 mph difference meaning I’m going 88-90mph in reality. You mentioned the part that we don’t know how many miles we are putting on the odometer. I don’t think I plan to sell but this is something good to keep in mind so that we aren’t tricker potential buyers if we don’t change tire revs via tuner or forscan.

Agreed, the fairness for the new owner and possibly forgetting for speed traps is why I might change it to be more realistic. It was a good mention, forgot about the odometer even being affected.

Hi Paul,

What is stock size for 17 tires? If it’s the same, I don’t think speed differences should change. When I went 5 taller than stock size my speed changes 2-3 mph at 70. And the difference gets larger at higher speeds. 90 = 95+. The cool thing is you technically can break limiter by over 7 mph+ with larger tires. Just gotta make sure it’s speed rated for that…

Warm regards,
Brandon

Long lasting. Michelin Defender. These are an all round tire. You probably do not get too much rain in San Diego. You may not need a siped tire.

Michelin Defenders all the way.
I run them on every vehicle I have owned for the last 20 years - only exceptions are the truck for off road purposes so it gets BFG atKO and the wifes current Mustang because its a little more high performance. But my daughter is running them and my Fusion ran them and so has everything else.

The stock tire size on 17's are 265/65/17. Mine were off about the same as yours went I went up one size. I'm glad that with the Livernois tuner you can adjust this. Although it really doesn't matter out here because everyone drive 10 mph over the speed limit anyways. ?

Hey Greg,

Long time no see! Thanks for chiming in with your experience and insight. I liked the look of these, I will have to look into them a little deeper in the further future when I purchase new set of on road tires. Would you say the defenders excel with handling on dry like turns etc. It’s mostly what I’m looking for, no need for wet performance much at all.

Warm regards,
Brandon

Brandon,
My STX factory package was 255/65/R17 which are 30.1" and the 265/70/17's are 31.6". I plan to check the speedo against the Garmin to see if there is any variation if much at all out of curiosity. Will get back to you with the results.
Thanks,
Paul

Good to know. Thanks Dave! Haha you aren’t wrong about the speedy drivers in some places. Did you adjust yours? I haven’t gotten around to it. I kind of like the idea of +7 over speed limiter if I ever get to go that fast ?

Ahh yes, you should have the similar calculations as me and Dave when you check. Oh yes, please do update us when you can Paul!

Warm regards,
