One of the reasons the speed is limited to 110 MPH, are the speed rating of the tires (T rated, max 114 MPH!).

Without admitting anything, if you remove the governor (yes it is possible, but don't ask me how!), you can see 125 with a lot of buffeting. Don't try this on stock or over-sized tires, or you just might see a set of pearly-colored gates, rather than a highway patrolman!

Honestly a very good fact to know about. Especially something to consider for those who upgrade tires and have a Thor foot. I know I got mine rated properly for the speeds I enjoy.

Back in the 70’s, I was on I-10 in New Orleans on my souped up RD 400 Yamaha, 6am making a trophy run to my hunting camp. There was no cars on the road,so I crossed 4 lanes of traffic with no signal. Trooper pulls me over and says “ Do you know why I pulled you over” I said, yes sir, I was going 130 miles per hour…He said “Well , I didn’t see that, I just saw you cross 4 lanes without signaling”

He let me go because I was honest

I have 2 vehicles that give interesting information. In DC, it's hard not to get somewhere without getting on a highway. Speed limit is, generally, keep up and don't get run over - figure between 60 and 80. When I fill up, it always amazes me running through the info. Average speed is always around 20mph. Even after an all highway run to Gettysburg and back. :frown:

Hi Folks,

147mph on the high speed test track in the SHO Ranger

Clocked by one of my engineers on a radar gun...Speedo was useless....

Best,
Phil
Hi Phil,

I just happen to have a 1991 SHO sitting out back with a dandy engine and trans but the Taurus around it is pretty bad.

2nd gen Rangers are pretty easy to come by here.

If you happen to have a few tips for how this could possibly end up being an unusually cool marriage, please let me know :like:

Hi Dennis,

The installation was done by Carron & Co., an outside job shop. Because it was an East/West motor we had to cut into the Cowl to get the throttle body to package. Rest of the install was pretty easy as it is a copy of the 3.0L...normal stuff...exhaust etc I know there were some wiring changes to the ECM but it was mostly just wire lengths for a North/South layout and the Engine Engineers tweeked the ECM for me to remove the 8500 rpm restriction so I could twist the motor to 10,000 rpm....coupled with a 5 speed manual it was a rocket ship. Once we got it running, I fit a mild version of my RaceTruck suspension so it would handle. For the High Speed Test Track stunt, I had a 3:45 rear gear in it...in town we went back to the 4:10 rear gear.

On the street at a stop light I could just dump the clutch and leave it in 1st gear until I hit 10,000, look over at Jonny Street Racer and then shift into 2nd and dust him off big time. Next light dude looks over and mouths WTF! I just smiled and sedately pulled away on the green light....

Since this was a one off that was going to be a real offering on the Ranger with a green light from Ford Marketing with one caveat...had to have Air Conditioning and we just could not package it with the darn XR50 power steering gear and the program never advanced beyond this one Ranger, Drat! If only we had SLA and rack and pinion while the SHO was around....We did build a new intake manifold with the throttle body 180° from the East/West manifold but never fit it to the vehicle....Sad to see this one go to the crusher...

Best,
Phil

I go to the Ford Nationals in Carlisle most years and I've seen two different Merkur XR4Ti's with SHO motors swapped in place of the turbo 4-banger.
