just a question -- why cut open the muffler? does changing it out help at all with power mpg etc? Ive been told long ago that engines need a certain amount of back pressure to function well what affect does the change have on the truck? does it make sound any less 4cyl ish? I love my little ranger but I sure do miss the V-8 sound from my 14 F150......
How did George Mallory respond when asked why he wanted to climb Mt Everest ? "because it's there"

Haha Reminds me of my favorite Joe Dirt quote.

How exactly is a rainbow made? How exactly does a sun set? How exactly does a posi-trac rear-end on a Plymouth work? No one knows, it just does.

I 've always enjoyed taking things about when they break to see what happened or if they can be fixed. Things like those cheap electrical timers with a whole bunch of reduction gears that pop out of place when you unscrew the case, or cameras with their tiny screws and gears. On my Saab I wasted hours of time trying to repair a steeper motor that I had to rewind the coil, but somehow reversed polarity and the thing worked backwards so pushing the button to increase cabin temp did the opposite - but only on the drivers side.

I finally cut open my stock muffler to see what was in there. I sketched in how the exhaust gas travels through the muffler. It was interesting, I previously knocked out the one inch restrictor at the end of the inlet pipe and I was not able to find it when I cut open the muffler!? My best guess would be that it exited the muffler, but i find it very unlikely that it traveled through the spring loaded valve in the midpipe. The valve is spring loaded in the closed position.. Looks pretty restricted in my opinon!

at an early age I took apart my older brothers pedometer to see what make it "tick" , these were mechanical devices back in the 60s, he was really ticked off when he found it in pieces. But I do remember he had a pretty cool working model of a v8 engine - clear plastic and battery driven so you see pistons moving, valves opening and a little light flashed at TDC. By age 16 I was fixing cars for friends and people in the neighborhood.

does removing the 1 inch restrictor help at all? I dont plan to do it but just really curious Id think its there for some reason like the one way valve to keep back pressure at a necessary minimum level maybe?
Turbos create their own back pressure. Thus a turbo operates most efficiently with zero restrictions in the exhaust path; be it a cat, muffler, small piping diameter, bends in the exhaust system, etc. That’s why spool (aka build up to boost) can happen so much faster when impediments to exhaust flow are removed.

Removing impediments is easy. Getting your exhaust to not sound like ass afterwards is the hard part lol.

Where the hell is this???

Mid pipe would be between the downpipe and the muffler. I don't recall seeing that but I also wasn't looking for it when I tried my truck without a muffler (don't recommend).

Oops I meant the middle pipe in the muffler
