Hey all!

I've had my '19 Ranger XLT for just about a year now and just now ran into my first major problem. On my way to work the other morning, I stepped down on the gas to go up a mountain and my engine started misfiring. The check engine light came on and started flashing. I pulled over, shut the truck off for a few minutes, and started up the mountain again. Not even 20-30 seconds later, the truck started misfiring again, with the check engine light flashing once again. At this point I decided it wasn't safe to drive and coasted back to the house. On my FordPass app, I received a warning about the powertrain control module detecting an engine misfire condition caused by poor fuel quality or a powertrain malfunction. As long as I wasn't putting the engine under load, it ran as smooth as ever. I managed to drive it to the dealer and drop it off, but they stated that it may take a few days to get the time to look at it.

I saw someone on here mention that their Ranger had a fuel injector go bad and had similar issues as what I'm having. As it just misfired under load, I don't suspect that would be gas would it? Any help from you all would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you guys!

Could be a coil pack or cracked plug too. Those have happened to other owners on here. Hopefully it’s something simple and they get it right and repaired first try. Let us know how it goes as it helps others later on that experience the same issue

Also thought about that too. My appointment's set for 11:00 tomorrow, so hopefully they'll figure it out and I'll report it back here.

This is your route to work? Meaning you drive it often?

Up the mountain?

How do you drive up this mountain?

What kind of fuel do you use?

If you're pussyfooting it up the mountain, in D, higher gear, lower rpms, it COULD be LSPI throwing your code.

Yeah, I take this route every day. I drive it pretty spirited too, so no pussyfooting unless I have to.
I've been using 89 octane since I got the truck.

Probably not LSPI then. Which is good. A faulty coil pack or plug will be much easier to diagnose and replace.

Yeah, I'm hoping it's something as simple as a coil pack or plug. I'll update you guys tomorrow if they find out what it is.

Exact same thing happened to me recently. Noticed it under load when towing and even when not towing it would do it if it got on the throttle hard. Took it in and they said there was water around the plug of cylinder 1 causing a misfire. There is a tsb out for it and they replaced the cover and plug. I'm not sure what exactly they meant as the cover though. Also not sure where the water would come from

Hoping I'm also having something as simple as is. Do you have a link to the TSB by any chance?

So the dealer called and told me what was up with my Ranger. Turns out I'm having the exact same problem Daniel is having, word for word. Somehow water got into the plug around the first cylinder and just started shorting it out. Parts have been ordered and I should have my Ranger back by the end of the week!

Finally got my Ranger back today! She's running like a champion. For anyone else who may come across this problem, the TSB # is 21-2147.

I opened up the hood after I got home and to my surprise, I noticed that they installed an engine cover! I'm assuming it's part of the TSB to help prevent water from reaching that area again.
