Generalized. I have seen it used in other explanations of LSPI.

If you read about how bad LSPI is, it is called super knock after all, failure of pistons and rod bending could very well happen to any stock based engine pretty quickly. From the look of the rod in the pic posted by the OG, the Ranger 2.3 rods look nice and strong, but if the force of LSPI is as violent as described in most articles about it, then I can see where the rod still might fail as well as the piston.

The rod could have survived the LSPI event though, and then subsequently went out because of debris in the cylinder and/or low oil pressure as a result of failures of other areas (piston, valves, etc.) that could cause debris to block the oil pickup and cause low pressure, etc. A spun rod bearing likes to a help rod leave the block eventually.

If you read the blog post by Stratified Tuning which has years of dealing with turbo GDI engines such as the Mazdaspeed 3/6 and Ford Ecoboost engines, they use the chart I posted. Again it is generalized. In Mazdaspeeds LSPI almost always caused a bent rod, but it is not as common in the Ecoboost. In the Ecoboost it is usually the piston that fails, but that does not mean the rod can't fail as well. Or as I mentioned above, the rod failure can result from other failures (such as the piston) if the engine continues to run past the initial event.

Only speculation but if a valve went and then next stroke up piston can’t travel to TDC something’s got to give. It then rod turns into the weakest link in a cascading mode of failures.

Ford has made a point of reinforcing ringlands on the 2.3 EB. The 2.3 is more likely to toss a rod before a piston falls apart. Every engine has a weak point.

Sucks it happened, but it is nice to see stage 3 helping you out! So If im understanding/remember this correctly, your tune was a five star tune and the warranty is through stage 3? Regardless, I'm happy that your about to be back in your truck!

For a CSI autopsy you'd have to take it to a shop that does such work.

In Fords defense, as discussed in the other thread...

• The tune voided the warranty.
• The oversized tires voided the warranty.
• The off-road exhaust voided the warranty.

But you knew that going into this, right? That's why you bought the Stage 3 warranty. Smart move on your part!

What are you going to do with the block? That would make an awesome coffee table base!

This is the messed up part John, I have a Ford Performance exhaust, and they won’t install it... I have to pay for a new stock exhaust, that I’m going to take off anyway, to install the Performance Exhaust, made by Ford. This has been some of the frustration with this whole process...

Tune is 5 Star, you are correct.

They have said absolutely nothing about it here on the forum. I think they are trying to pretend this didn't happen.

Extended warranty on the tune is ran by Stage 3, they've been helpful, not only to ProjectMidnight, but they've explained quite a few things here as well.

Me too. For all we know it could have been low on oil or had the wrong oil.

Or like some are having fuel in the oil to the extent of an over filled crankcase
