Most people mention idle, but I have even noticed it sometimes under light acceleration. It isn't pinging, btw, but the sewing machine sound.
Very diesel like.

Nice to see another Mazdaspeeder/Ranger owner on here. I have an '09 as well, and yeah the Ranger DISI noise is wayyy louder than what I came to expect from the Mazda. As others have mentioned, way more mechanical noise down lower in the RPM range. Glad to know I'm not going crazy!MUCH louder than the DISI turbo in the Mazdas. That incessant clicking noise is the injectors. The HPFP is pretty dang loud too. Louder than my mazda with the autotechs. I'm getting used to it knowing that its just normal operation noise. As long as it keeps making those noises, I'm content lol.
Likewise! I've noted a few of us on this forum. The engine in the Ranger was a huge selling point for me after becoming really familiar with the speed3 engine. I need to update my sig though as I sold both the speed3 and M3 to buy the Ranger. I'll scoop up something cheap to replace my weekend car need at some point.Nice to see another Mazdaspeeder/Ranger owner on here. Yeah, same here. It's amazing what less than 10 years in tech has done for the 2.3. MS3's are dirt cheap now, especially if you're willing to do some engine upgrades etc. Crazy to think all I need is a tune on the Ranger, and I'll most likely put down more power than my MS3 w/ CST4 turbo, downpipe, intake, internals, intercooler, custom tune, etc. Getting a tune on the Ranger is VERRRRY tempting. Need more CHOOCH noises on the Ranger to hide all that ticking though.Likewise! I've noted a few of us on this forum. Haha. That would make a good video!! And yeah, the MS3 has always been more of a "roll" car, than a dig car. I had my MS3 dyno tuned last year (93 octane only) and I'm 326 hp and 336 tq. I know there's plenty more that can be squeezed out, but the (upgraded) top mount was heat soaking (no fan on it), and I wanted to keep it well under 400 to be safe.My 2013 Mazdaspeed 3 according to the Cobb AP is putting down 320hp/390tq at the wheels and I KNOW that if weight were not a factor, the Ranger would absolutely obliterate it in any match and honestly it still might despite the weight. Right now if I used 4WD I think it would easily pull it in a stoplight race. Amazing what just a couple of mods will do for this noisy little f***er!
I also think that it's very quiet and composed in the cabin for a pickup. I have the Hankook's and those have been pleasantly quiet as well for being on the aggressive side of an all-terrain. I will probably get another set when these are spent. I do agree that I wish something could be done about the buzzing, but I didn't buy the truck for the noises it makes. And it's damn good at the things I did buy it for, so I'm not too upset about it. Considering the engine cover but not sure it's worth it. Wish I could try it to see how much of a difference it makes.I kind of dig the noisy fan at startup. I'm glad it doesn't last too long though.
While the engine can be somewhat noisy, I find the cab while driving to be very quiet - probably the quietest vehicle I've owned. Maybe part of it is the ANC, maybe part of it is insulation - I'm not sure, but I'm very happy with the cabin noise level.
I don't know about "significantly", but I did notice mine also cut the noise a bit.I found that the engine cover significantly reduced the engine noise.
Hadn’t thought about it until you just mentioned it. Our hood is Aluminum right? If that’s true then high frequency noise would be amplified because of the material. My guess is some strategic placement of some sound proofing material and the engine cover would mask most of if not all of this noise. The fuel injectors are obnoxious on this truck. I can't believe in 2021 they can't find a way to address that pathetic ticking noise. Why not design a sound cover just for the injector system instead of a full shroud for the engine.
Mine was pretty significant, as in enough that the wife noticed and said "Why does your truck sound different?"I don't know about "significantly", but I did notice mine also cut the noise a bit.
