But right now they are ridiculously expensive. Why should I help buy some rich guy's car?

Not entirely true, at least in SC. After I got the hybrid in 2014 I was surprised to get a second tax bill so I called the SCDMV and found out it was because of the hybrid. Every year after this was a separate line item.

Ohio just increased license plate fees from $50 to $125 to off set it a little. I pay around $350 in state an fed gas tax in addition to the plate fee.

California an Washington have talked about taxing by the mile driven to recoup the lost gas tax cash.

Your Model 3 was $15-$20k more than a comparable ICE vehicle.

Yes, gas is subsidized. But not directly to the consumer.

I buy all vehicles new and drive them until the cost to repair them is well over their value and what I can get insurance to cover them at. I have a ‘98, 2016, & 2021 I plan on driving many more years.

I don't see a big drop in price until they create a battery that uses cheaper, more readily available components. I read where MIT has built a few prototypes trying to make a cheaper one with equal or better range.

A large scale shift is still decades away.
