Rust Experts needed

A new power transmission line is being run down the road from me. The power poles are being lifted with helicopter in sections. The factory finish is rust. When I asked about the rust, they said it was done that way intentionally and will last considerably longer than any other applied coating. Apparently it has become a thing.....

Growing up in SW PA, we'd occasionally head in to the city and I remember marveling at the US Steel Tower (now UPMC) and always wondered why it was allowed to rust (the main columns are on the exterior). This thin layer of oxidation protects the interior from further corrosion. This was in the 70's.

Not sure it applies to the underside of the Ranger though

So for the future novices who come across this thread, and definitely not for me because I already know, how does one know if they have aluminum or cast steel knuckles?

Aluminum ones will be light in color like a beer can, iron will be black and have surface rust.

Weathering steel, often referred to by the trade name Cor-Ten, is also used to build maritime shipping containers. Good stuff, and quite expensive. Nearly zero chance of seeing it on a motor vehicle.

You can also use a magnet. It will stick to steel but not aluminum.

Why do some have steel and some aluminum? Package dependent? I'm assuming from this thread that aluminum is better. Is steel better for off-roading and therefore only on FX4 packages or something? I have a Sport 4x4 FWIW.

A mid-production run change by Ford - might have been cost-savings, might have been a supply chain issue, might have been the tariff on imported aluminum. I’m just happy I have aluminum - easier to separate the taper.

You should have seen the face of the rotor before the brakes were applied! I was about to threaten to lemon-law it. </snark>
