Actually it's been around for quite a while. Growing up in SW PA, we'd occasionally head in to the city and I remember marveling at the US Steel Tower (now UPMC) and always wondered why it was allowed to rust (the main columns are on the exterior). This thin layer of oxidation protects the interior from further corrosion. This was in the 70's.A new power transmission line is being run down the road from me. The power poles are being lifted with helicopter in sections. The factory finish is rust. When I asked about the rust, they said it was done that way intentionally and will last considerably longer than any other applied coating. Apparently it has become a thing.....
