While I do walk around my Ranger on a regular basis, today was the first time in awhile that I did so after I took it through the car wash. The passenger side is peppered with rust spots, all pretty small, but all over the entire side. I'll have to take it into the dealer to see if they'll cover it, while it isn't through the metal it is 1 year old with 14k miles and parked in a garage. I'll have to get some pictures later.

This might be it for me, if they won't fix it I'm going to see what Carvana will give me, and then I'm going to cancel my Bronco reservation. I have to wait until we finish buying a house, but I'm not spending money on a vehicle with rust like this already, and I'm not giving them any more money.

Oh, no! That's not good. Any way to get any pics? Maybe the side was damaged in transit and repainted before sale. That may not show up in records. Maybe pull a carfax to verify?

Is it bubbling under the paint, or dust as said above? if it's not bubbling it might be worth cleaning it with a clay bar, or have it professionally detailed and specifically ask for it to be clayed.

If it's on top it's actually pretty common to happen during transport or if you live near certain industrial areas. A clay bar and/or iron removal products will clear it right up and you'll never know it was there.

It could be rail dust, but I’ve seen that before and it’s never been so bad I couldn’t clean it off myself. Here are a few shots. I’m having a hard time moving, so everything has me on edge, this didn’t help.

It's hard to tell, but that looks topical. From my past experience with bad rust, it usually bubbles the paint. This doesn't look like that. A good cleaning would be where I'd start.

Defiantly rail dust. Not easily removed sometimes. I’ll take your Bronco reservation.

ok, ok. Thanks for the input, I'll see what I can do about that.

Either way, I'm pretty sure as soon as I close and move I'm selling the Ranger, while I like it I'll never get as much for it as I will right now. That leaves a lot of pressure on the Bronco to live up to my expectations.

I noticed some similar tiny rust specs on my paint as well as a larger stain on the silver part under the opening under the grill. The specs are so small I cannot get them to show on camera but they're there in person. They definitely seem like they're just surface contamination and I know mine aren't from rail dust from shipping because I thoroughly washed, decontaminated, and clayed it last summer when I was trying to fix the other strange orange stains I had. I'm guessing its iron specs in with the usual road grime that stick to the paint then rust away from the NY salt causing stains.

This is the spot on the valence. Small but noticeable.

Rich like others have said it's most likely rail dust. Since it's probably been there from the original transit it's most likely surfacing now. I would use a good clay mitt as they're easier and more forgiving than a clay bar. Before you start do the bag test which is while the truck is wet put your hand in a sandwich bag and run it over the surface. You will notice it's going to be very rough, these are contaminates in the paint. When you clay after each panel do this over again with the bag until it's smooth. You wouldn't believe what it feels like even brand new. I wouldn't let this deter you from another Ford product as this is common with every manufacturer. Just some are worse than others. If you want to go this route check out my detail write up and I've explained how to clay safely. I'll find it and link it below for you. Don't give up just yet a little work and it should be good again. Oh, like someone else mentioned you might need to do an iron removal too.
