I've heard that lift blocks are more for show and a bad idea if you plan on really off-roading with your vehicle and things such as rock crawling. Is this true?

Blocks can/will increase axle wrap/ wheel hop. Different springs or shackles are preferred.

Is this bad for off roading, the wheel hop?

Its not optimal for performance, and the extra shock load isn't good on the drivetrain.
I'm trying to get a 6" or more lift, do you have any recommendations? The only lift kits this size that I've found all use loft blocks.

Six Inches!
You are going to need a lot of other expensive stuff to get the wheel geometry back in line. Don't cheap out on the blocks. Six Inches is a hell of project to undertake. No cutting corners on this one.

Definitely going to end up with a cradle drop for the front diff. If you're into 6+ inch lifts, this is probably not the platform for that. Go watch the aussie dudes on youtube, specifically the episode on lift kits larger than 2"

If you're worried about offroad performance, don't go 6" of lift.

High lifts are for show boats. The only reason for lifting is for more clearance, for tires and travel. Larger tires raise the bottom of the differential for more clearance, but, lower the rear end ratio for less power. Then you have to change the two ring and pinions. Increasing real off road performance is a many facetted project.

Right, that's why I want to lift it, get bigger tires in there without chopping up the body of the Ranger, or at least not that much. Can't I just get new differentials with higher ratio instead of changing the transfer case or transmission gears?

How come? Higher lift = bigger tires = more ground clearance.
Much easier to break, higher center of gravity, easier to roll. Parts availability, etc. You do you, but I think the rest of us are in agreement that 2-3.5" is max lift that is reasonable to obtain and use on this platform.

Still with no lift block or with lift block?

What size tires do you want? If you need a 6" lift to clear them I would pass. You would definitely need to re gear the front and rear and right now no one makes any kits to do that. You would also need quite a few other mods to make it work. Think smaller for off road performance. Larger tires don't equal more capability off road. A lot of times it's the opposite. If you go with a smaller lift (old man emu for example) you can do leaf springs that come with the kit.
