Rippled paint near bottom of car on both sides

So I noticed today near the end of the bed on the bottom on both sides it’s very rippled like this:

Is this normal? Did it come like this and I never noticed before?

I believe it's textured like that from the front wheel-well all the way to the rear, on both sides.

Thanks, you’re totally right now that I peek all the way under. It just seems to run up onto the side a little at the very back there, I presume for extra protection. Cant believe I never noticed that before!

My salesman actually pointed that out. He said a lot people come back and say something so he just tells them now in the beginning lol

It's a resilient coating designed to protect lower auto body panels from damage such as stone chipping.

Toyota has been using this for decades. Our 1st Tacoma had this back in 1997

It's a stone guard coating applied prior to factoy painting. It's been around for years.......

Yep. First car I remember it on was my folks’ Mercury Topaz in about 1986.

Pretty sure that is caused by installing a damper. The tailgate moves too slow to pull all the wrinkles out of the paint.

Naw, it's just undercoating overspray that went on before the body paint ( circa Early 60's) before it became a dealer option and dropped altogether. Just doing it for service calls...

Positive hahaha. The paint was black. The one thing that sticks out too was that I believe it was the first car we had without the little rain gutters over the door.

Yes, stone guard protection, same purpose as the clear tape applied to the front lower portion on the bed by the back of the cab.
