There were just 2 things which would of swayed my decision:
  • Price was in excess of 45K
  • Truck design, engineering and construction was via a Ford/Yugo partnership

Was almost killed in a Yugo many moons ago while on a test drive. It completely died in the middle of an intersection. I felt like I was in a sardine can:facepalm:

Does anyone know how often they update their incentives? Are the ones available now what they're doing for the whole month or is there anything new that might be offered for President's Day? Hoping for 0% for 60 months, but after seeing the 4th quarter earnings, I doubt that'll happen.

Yea, I’m wondering the same thing... but I’m on the lease boat. I’ve been less then impressed with the deals I’ve gotten, but man I want that XLT in Cactus Gray with the black package so badly I’m seriously considering over paying a bit. Just no incentives at the moment which obviously makes a big difference.

Hell, I’ve been looking at Tacomas too and am in the process of getting a quote on a TRD Pro. It looks like I can get a fully loaded Pro for a similar price of an XLT... seems silly from Fords perspective. I’d really prefer the Ranger, but if the pricing is close enough, it’s hard to take $10,000 less truck for the same price.

Well it looks like this might be linked to why some of us got such great deals in November and December and those deals are all gone now:

Ford's 2019 profits wiped out by a tough fourth quarter

4th quarter was a good time to buy - when Ford was feeling the crunch the worst. Could have renamed that "Ford profits wiped out by selling Rangers for $10K off." :D
The crazy rebates available at that time on the XLTs was what made me pull the trigger a month or two before I was initially looking to buy. Also made me get an XLT over the Lariat because the price difference would have been $10K more for a Lariat. I was happy to save that money and immediately spend $5K+ in upgrades and still come out ahead. I've had my truck for 14 months and could sell it now for right around what I paid for it (minus upgrades). That said, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Ranger at the current prices if I were looking to buy now.

Gotta call BS on that.

TRD Pros are running $48,500-$50,100 in my area, dealer internet advertised price.

XLT SuperCrews 4x4s are running $37,100-$40,700 in my area, again dealer internet advertised price.

If you can get a 2021 TRD Pro for $38,000 you should buy enough to fill a car hauler and drive them out here.

Wow, I just checked the dealer that I got mine through. In 2 months since picking it up 1/2 of the incentives I got are gone now! I had about 4.5K off sticker on mine.

No wonder the salesman emailed me saying there is a bonus finders fee for anyone I send them that buys a truck.

oh I know it and I’m not suggesting I would pay anywhere close to $38,000 for a Pro, in fact I don’t expect to pay much less then MSRP, if any discount is to be had on them at all.

But when running my lease numbers with my trade taken into account, the RV on a Ranger is 65% for my lease term, whereas it’s 78% on the Tacoma. I’m not saying the the lease quote will come back cheaper than my XLT lease quote, but they may be in the same ballpark. That 13% difference in RV is a big deal.

I had a quote worked up on a TRD Sport with the Premium package and using an initial offer of basically a $2,000 down payment from my trade I was at $385 a month. The MSRP was slightly north of 45k. The XLT I’m tracking is about $39k and being sold at invoice. Even with the Ford dealer giving me an extra $1,000 for my trade, the payment is about $40 a month more. It all comes down to the Residual value. A rebate from Ford would help soften the blow a bit.

Does not mesh with this....

I don't do long term rentals. But it seems reasonable to me that if one holds it's value better compared to the other it would cost less to rent, as it is depreciating less over that time.

I don't think we'll ever get back to the glory days of 2019 Black Friday $10K off, but looking around there's a decent deal here or there. Just found the exact same truck I bought in a new 2020 for $6K off in the Green Bay Wisconsin area if anyone wants to nab it. Other models seem to be only around 2-4K off discount / customer cash, so not sure why this one has a higher discount. Maybe it's considered old stock, but other 2020's aren't discounted

There's no way I would pay the premium for a Lariat either. In fact it's like paying extra for getting a far worse truck with all the ugly chrome and wrinkly floppy slippery leather seats, and the wheel options all seem ugly on them too. (all IMHO, to each his own)

I guess I do not get the logic of why would would want to do a lease. First, I would want to stay in negative equity position on depreciating asset for as short as possible. In a lease, you are probably in that position for the whole term. Second, with a lease you always have a payment (a.k.a. debt), and with having zero equity, you don't get away from it.

You just hit the nail on the head. It is a depreciating asset. It is not something we collect that will be worth more money someday; it will be worth less and less and less, unless we put it in a garage and don't use it, which kinda defeats the purpose.

I have leased almost all of my vehicles since 1986. I almost never have had to worry about a repair of any kind coming out of my pocket. I never have to worry about "trade in value" or selling to some creep who's going to try to con me. I never had to have large sum come out of my savings to purchase the thing. (I'm almost always in a zero-down lease.) I've had some absolute steals along the way, deals that just made no sense but they were real. A brand new MB C-Class, no money down, $299 per month + tax was probably my favorite. I also get to drive new every three years or so. I like driving new vehicles, so that's a win to me.

It's not for everyone, obviously. It's worked out very well for me for 35 years and I don't see myself changing now.

Hi Timothy,

There are only 4 vehicles on which I made money. My 71 Pantera, My 1957 VW, 1958 Austin-Healy 3000 and my 1999 F 150 4x4.

The F150 4x4 is really weird... Purchased on A Plan for my son who was on his way to Michagan Tech for his first year of college. Vehicle had about 15 miles on it as we drove up the the UP... A week later we learned it was totalled off a shallow cliff by a son gone wild. Filed a claim with my insurance and they paid me off for an amount $3000 above what I paid. So I called them and they said they paid off on Kelley Blue Book and on a less than month old F150 4x4 the amount was more than I paid. Sheesh.... how to make money...have your kid total a vehicle every few months.... Weird....

Best,
