Let's clarify. You're attempting to hold Ford accountable. This isn't their first rodeo.
Yes. But I am willing to go as far as I’m able.

After reading through this thread it’s understandable that there is some controversy. Right now giving Ford the benefit of doubt on what they will or won’t do is really more dollars and cents and potentially bad PR. We all know the difficulties in the present marketplace because of the way things are right now. Everyone wants answers right now but in reality everything is moving at a snails pace.

Might take a while to get resolved but knowing them they will quickly see the predicament they’re in and move to correct it. That’s anyone’s guess right now. With the current interactions already in play the process has started.

Let it play out as it is. Don’t tow so you cover yourself, or if you do flash back to factory and go. Yes, I understand that’s not what you want but that’s the smart thing to do.

You are absolutely right. Luckily I have already taken the tune off and have no plans to tow for the next few weeks. I’d rather not have anything to do with this tune and will be looking at others shortly.

Just a refund for what I paid and my install fees.
Install fees? You paid Ford to install a programmer into your ODB port? WTF has this world come to where dudes are tuning Ford Rangers for better performance yet they fear voiding their warranties when doing so.

I thought this thread was a troll thread at first....

It’s not for lack of ability and no it wasn’t Ford. I can tell you are one of those guys that just likes to insult people to make you feel more masculine... The fee was well worth it.

No, I'm one of those guys that knows my rights when it comes to vehicle mods and warranties. I've modded nearly every vehicle I've owned and not once did I pay anyone to install a handheld power programmer/tuner. That's absurd, but then again....so is threatening Ford with a lawsuit! If you don't like some people's bluntness, maybe you should reconsider forum life.

I believe the tune would not be warranted if not installed by Ford or ASE(pro?).
I like the manufacturers warranty, so I install once it's past warranty.
OP, I think you should get what your asking as the discrepancy looks to be
in your favor.

Good luck, stay calm.

To a certain extent, power and torque are trade-offs. If you want better towing performance, then you probably want more low-end torque which typically means less high-end power. I'm guessing the Ford tune provides more high-end power, so their "not recommended for towing" comment just means their tune doesn't offer more low-end torque. If I was getting a tune, I'd ask to see the different torque and power curves before I made a decision so I would know what I was paying for.

That’s not the impression I was getting from them.

My 2 word response to this:
SEND IT!

My reasoning:
You have Ford warranty since you bought the Ford Performance Tune, so just do whatever you want, and if something breaks, they have to cover it under warranty. Just don't tell them you were towing and they'll never be able to argue it.

The issue here is many of us have gotten the Ford Performance tune and just recently found out it’s not recommended to tow with. When I ordered my tune there was no statement on their website stating it’s not recommended. I got mine specifically to tow. Yesterday I spoke with Ford Performance and it didn’t seem to go anywhere. What I was told is we shouldn’t assume we can tow with a tune and that is our fault. I spoke with them again this morning and the gentleman I spoke to gave me his email. He said he’s got 5 complaints so far in regards to their tune. I’m looking to get as many complaints to him as possible. He said the more complaints he gets the more likely that are to take action. This is his email. [email protected] I’m asking everyone to come forward who has been effected by this. The more people we get the better. I am contacting a lawyer in regards to this and have every intention of holding them responsible for this. I have two screenshots here. One from their page on 10/30/2020 and one from today 02/10/2021.

What a friggin joke. For one, the Ranger is not a tow vehicle. It has a tiny 140 cid engine. So you failed to know what your buying on two counts. Now you want to blame someone else. Maybe you should have bought a f-150 or a super duty that will tow a house!

Hmmm. Ford certainly likes to market this truck as a tow vehicle. Why make the limit 7500 lbs? Why design the small engine to produce so much torque at such a usable part of the powerband? Why mate it to the same robust 10-speed as the F150 if they didn't expect you to tow with it...?

I honestly don't see the reason for backlash at OP here. Certainly they were being brash by threatening legal action, but they paid a decent amount for something and then Ford switched up their advertising and use verbiage. The OP should absolutely be entitled to a refund under deceptive trade practices laws.

I for one bought the tune thinking it would be fine to tow with. I would have thought more than twice if they had included that little note originally. I was also completely misinformed despite asking way too many questions and using a lot of hypothetical scenarios with Ford employees regarding how the warranty works. I am perturbed at the way Ford has rolled this out and marketed it to us, but I am not even in the realm of considering legal action. That being said my local Ford dealers (besides the sales staff) have always tried to work with me and consider my best interests, even though I am admittedly a bit of a tough customer.
