Fab Fours is the only company I know if that makes an aftermarket bumper for the Colorado that has the steps built in. That would be perfect for the Ranger. Regarding the lack of step for the ZR2, the reason it was removed was to improve departure angle.
I would gladly sacrifice some departure angle to get the step back.

I looked at several ZR2s.

The bed on them is even higher than ours, close if not the same as my 4x4 F250 Superduty with 34" tires was.

This post is just like the damper posts, unfortunately a whole bunch of weenie car people purchased Rangers. They are used to a car with all of the frilly things that come with them. So, now they want all the frilly things on their truck thus pushing up the price and all of the complications that come with the frilly things. You baby cakes are so dependent on frilly things, what are you going to do when the pandemic hits the frilly things plant. I know, you will just melt in a little pile of weepy ____.

I just tried it. It was very easy and I was able to gently lower the tailgate without one of those controversial tailgate thingies.
So, you jump to the ground from the be

Much work involved in making the bracket? F150 steps are much more plentiful. I don't mind putting the work in.

It's not really possible to get a non-frilly vehicle now.

The cheapest, lowest cost, barest-bones vehicle you can get from any mainstream manufacturer will have at a minimum EFI, ABS, and airbags.

There are those that bemoan the passing of the carburetor, but I've had vehicles with a carburetor and no thanks to those things ever again.

Other standards, such as power windows and locks, are now so reliable as to be pretty much a non-issue (unless it's a Chrysler product)

The new truck from Ford that slots below the Ranger (tentatively called the Maverick) is supposed to be the no frills bargain truck.

I'll bet it comes standard with power windows/locks like the XL Ranger does.

There is a step that a few of the members have added and I've thought of buying one myself, but they are a little pricy. There are some threads on this that you can look at and figure out if you think one of them is worth the price.
I got this one for $25 https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NA9KEPB Works great. Doesn't include a hitch pin, so you'll want to get one.

Not very effective when the tailgate is down.
If you'll be in and out of the back (e.g. removing something dumped in the back or loading a bunch of small things), it's worth removing the tailgate which comes off in about 30 seconds. If I don't want to remove the tailgate because I'll only be in/out once or twice, I just step on the rear tire

How does this movable step work when full of mud/snow and/or dirt? Just seems like it's in the direct path of anything kicked up from the rear tire.

Have a neighbor with a F-150 equipped with the factory side step (in front of the rear wheel). It fills with kicked up crap and In the winter he can't get it to pop out, and once out can't get it to latch when trying to reseat . He's also had it pop out while driving after thinking it was latched - it wasn't.

That's both logical and frugal.....

And for folks that can't step that high.... HitchMate Tire Step

Tire Step.webp

Once you figure out how to unplug the wiring for the backup camera...
