Looking at this setup, wondering if it's that much diffent then having the dog on seats? It's a bit diffcult to see, but looks like you've added a wooden support system of some sort.
It’s lower, flat, and butts up against the back of the center console. This provides significantly more room without the seat being in there.

I pick my chihuahua up and toss him in like a sack of rice. He lands paws down just like a cat lol

Good ideas, especially for some dogs with challenges, like the 3-legged Great Dane, or my little 20 pound Cheech.

He wants to climb in and steps onto the side steps and grabs the sill plate but I pick him up. Even at a light 20 pounds, it still hurts my old herniated and degenerated back BUT he has torn both rear ACLs (he had CCL surgery, like our ACL, on one side) so we're extra careful with him.

I'm going to look into the stair/ramps many of you suggested (lol, they weigh more than he does!). He'd probably be less nervous being allowed to clamber in rather than me picking him up. Poor guy is a behavioral mess - he was in seven homes in the two years before we got him including a city dog pound and two rescue shelters.

Thanks for all the great links and sharing your love of dogs. =)

These are out 2 little rescue kids, and what I ended up making for them....knock wood their both around 15 lbs so we can pick em up easily.
Did a rear seat delete on my Scab, found a poly type crate that was 4 feet long. Bolted it to the seat floor and mounted 2 dog carriers on top.
Both of them love to travel when we go camping and just curl up and sleep or, since the seats are high enough, look out the windows.
And, yes, the seats are secured down, and their retaining leash's are tethered to an eyebolt under the seats.
