For the people that are still on the fence about replacing their DPFE sensors, Gears Magazine has an excellent article about another Ford vehicle using the 10R80 and the journey a shop took to fix a transmission problem.

https://gearsmagazine.com/magazine/a-10r80-with-p0735-and-p2704-issues/

In short, the transmission was out no less than 2 times with a myriad of parts replaced before they tracked down the actual problem of the 5th gear flare. (Answer: A Multiple cylinder misfire caused by coils/plugs)

So yes, in the world we live in with computer controlled everything, don't discount regular maintenance on your truck, including plugs, DPFE, air filter, etc.

You never know what one little thing might make you think your transmission is on the way out.

Also:

Don't buy your sensors from Amazon or Ebay

and

Change your transmission fluid on a regular basis.

And yes, I realize this is an F150 and a misfire, but if you don't think that the Ranger and F150 are programmed similarly, then well, there's nothing I can do to help you.

The more complex the plumbing the easier it is to stop it up.

How in the world can a mechanic figure this out?

Rule o thumb time.
Change your plugs, DPFE sensor, air filter, clean the throttle body, and look for vacuum leaks before messing with your transmission (other than fluid/filter changes and adding LubeGard Platinum).

Any suggestion on best place to get a good price? I thought it was Rockauto but didn't seem any better

"Differential Pressure Feedback EGR" DPFE replacement solved my rough shifting issue over a year ago. If you Google "DPFE sensor location" you'll see a set of pictures that are clear, with red arrows to help. Here's one. Also some videos. I did mine in 15 minutes after I got the truck, tools, light, and step stool situated. I needed the step stool because my back was hurt, and I had to lay across the engine to guard my back. I bought two but I haven't needed the second one yet.

Mine actually threw a code for it. Made the transmission smoother afterwards. This was after a transmission replacement too. But it was replaced because it was actually shot.

Mine was driving rough but, surprisingly, had not thrown a code, yet when I replaced the DPFE, it immediately drove and shifted smoothly again.
