I'm gonna go with this. Just took the tailgate off and looked at both ends of the pivot assembly and nothing looked like it was missing. At least that's what I'm gonna tell myself going forward?
solid approach removing the tailgate and keep going forward removing stuff until you find where that piece came from. Kinda reminds me of all the things I've taken apart and when finished reassembling have one or two extra pieces - anymore than that usually prompted taking it apart again to put back the leftover pieces. But don't just stop with the tailgate.......

They literally had you "puttin' wheels on Cadillacs?"
I think they were hoping I'd quit...all 140lbs of me at that time lol...I'm not saying I put any nuts where they didn't belong...Oh how I dreaded the Limos coming down the line...

No damnpers in the red zone. It takes too much time restricts other people. Or lift weights, get a little arm strength so you can really throw the suitcase in the bed without waiting for the tailgate to come down.

Don't think you guys quite saw what I was doing. I thought the quotes would help but apparently my deep voice didn't translate through the text.

One thing I do know, Sid. Guarantee that when "pull out the switch all three of 'em come on!"

Now we know the true orgins of the Misfit toys!

I had a pretty strong idea that's where ya were going lol.

Before I retired from GM we were making the Impala, Camaro, and XTS, or starter casket as I liked to call them. My buddy used to put the wheels on, and that song was a staple on the stereo at least once a shift. Good times looking back three years later I guess lol.

And true to @Msfitoy's memory, Scotty always said the limo/hearse option was a pain in the tuckus.

Probably the toughest job on the line…grab 6 nuts…throw the wheel tire and catch a stud… start each nuts grab the monster hanging lug gun and drive all nuts simultaneously…one set every 30 seconds…don’t even think about dropping a tire

Looks like a turbine vane retainer clip cover from a Rolls-Royce RB211 turbo fan engine. Probably fell off a Boeing 757 during landing or takeoff.

Either that or something non-Ford like has been suggested

Having owned a few trucks for a few decades now, I’m now leaning toward it being something that someone tossed in the bed of the truck while walking by. When I didn’t have a canopy/topper on my truck, I’d find all kinds of unwanted items in the back.

Mostly discarded Tim Horton’s cups. ?

It might be the thingamabob that attaches to the whatchamacallit that rests on the doohickey I think. I've never seen a brownish one though as they are always black. Good luck..
Dave I think it would be more helpful if you avoided technical jargon for us non -engineers!
