Hi I have a 2020 ranger and I'm looking to put a lift kit on it, but wanting to stay in a safe zone where I go the highest possible without starting to to mess up the ball joints angles and what not. How high do you guys think I can go without getting in all that note* I was thinking of a 3.5" left.

My own (admittedly amateurish) opinion on this is that Ford Performance offered us a two-inch leveling kit for a reason, that is, as you said above, "to stay in the safe zone...."

Another important question is how do you intent to use the truck? If you actually intent to use it as an overland vehicle. There is such a thing as to much lift. If you want to splash around in a mud puddle. The more lift the better. And if you just want a good looking practical truck. You’ll want to stay somewhere between stock and 3 inches. I built a ridicules 1986 Nissan 4x4 back when I was young. 6 inches of lift. 38 inch super swampers on a truck with a 106hp four cylinder engine. And the truck had no air conditioning. Needless to say I royally f#$ked that truck up. When I was done it had a top speed of 60mph. And the swampers hummed so loud. I couldn’t stand driving it. I thought it would be cool to have the biggest-small truck in town. I was wrong!

If you want to lift the vehicle and not level it(yes there is a difference) then the best lift kit put there i have found is the Old Man EMU lift by ARB. I have that lift and what it gives you is all shocks with new coil and leaf springs. I do not like the other lift kits as you will most likely get blocks for the rear and even though you grt lift out of the rear you do not get more flexibility in the rear. It lifts the front by 2.4 inches and the rear by 1.6 inches. For tires I have 265/70-17 Bridgestone Dueler Revo 3's. It is on the stock wheel so that is why i have that size but for on road and off road it does great!! Even the price is considered reasonable for what you are getting. Here arw some pictures of the truck with that combination as well and yes all the angles are flsafe both front and rear!!

With that being said the Old Man EMU Lift would do you well. As you can tell i go off road with this truck and plan to build it for Overlanding. So far with the trails i have hit here in Colorado it has done well with this lift and tire combination and I haven't hit anything underneath either.

Based on the trails you are defining, the stock truck will probably serve your needs just fine... maybe level it.

Do a bit of off roading and evaluate the stock configuration, see what you think, then go from there.

I will agree with Henry to an extent. Yes the new Rangers are very capable stock but in my experience the ride offroad is in need of a lot of work. When I found the Old Man EMU lift I took a chance with it and I'm glad I did. Offroad performance is cleaned up to the point you can control it much better. No you wont be ready for the Baja but I'm sure no one here is planning to do that anyway.

Hi Richie,

I'd second Frenchy Chris' remarks, in particular if you want a true front and rear lift to gain capability and clearance.

I'm not a drive train/suspension specialist, and there are engineering and mechanical oracles on this forum happy to help. That said, I went through the same calculation last month.

I moved from a ca 3" spacer lift with stock FX4 shocks (block in the rear; spacer above the front struts; Rough Country UCAs) to a Ford Performance Fox 2.0 coil over set up (resulting in a 2" level; kept the RC UCAs). I looked at (it seemed) every coil-over/leaf option on the table, and seriously considered the Old Man EMU set up, finally resting on the Ford Performance Fox 2.0 set up for the reasons you highlight as concerns + capability.

We plan to use the truck for moderate trails, modest ORV park visits, and midwest/east coast overloading, as well as a daily driver. It's only been a week, but I've been quite happy with the result. I assess that the truck gained marked capability and it rides better; the ride is much less rigid, yet not soft. I like the appearance. Of course, we lost an inch of clearance, but for me that was well worth it.

As you've done, I found the topic of lift a cornucopia of opinions, options, and costs. In addition to the many helpful streams here, I spoke with two dealerships, Stage3 Motorsports, and a Ford ASE-certified mechanic friend.

A range of opinions (as well as incentives and interest). With the exception of the warranty question (always a contentious and confusing matter, and one driven by profit) - all assessments landed at near the same conclusion: the best intersection of capability, drive train/suspension durability, and warranty-ability was a coil-over lift no higher than 3". Beyond 3" the strains you note become a problem; at 3"+ a diff drop and new UCA were highly recommended.

Because looks matter, I attached a photo of the before (above) and after (below).

Best of luck.

-Chris
