Wondering if your charger hiccuped and reversed the polarity. A maintainer type could possibly do this. If the battery cells are out of balance, some cells will discharge before the others. As it continues to discharge, they will start to reverse polarity. Now, if there is an external factor that keeps the current from flowing, like for instance, when the batteries are in a series, and then one goes bad, the battery will start reversing polarity on some or all of its cells.

Wait...are you mixing batteries?

As in different batteries hooked up together?

I've learned you can't have that. All needs to be the same. Brand, voltage and amps. A battery that's stronger than another can "charge" the weaker one.
Hi Figarou,

I have a battery isolator called a Bird between banks and a huge relay controlled by the Bird,

best,
Phil

Hi Jim,

Battery never Froze...it was in the garage at my house...always above freezing...I think my Xantrex charger/inverter malfunctioned and overcharged the battery.... JMO...

Best,
Phil
One of my batteries on the solar aerator down at the pond went BOOM , a very loud BOOM last year and looked very similar to that . It was indeed the battery charge controller that just kept charging at max rate . I thought someone had set off a 1/2 pound of tannerite on my gun range :)

Hi Folks,

I had an experience today on my Diesel Pusher RV before which I have never experienced.. I check the RV frequently for electrical health via several monitors and there have always been Green Lights for normal system functionality. So decided to pull it out and give it a sponge bath today. It would not start...It has two Group 31S batteries. So I accessed the engine start batteries to see what might be going on with these batteries... As far as I could tell, things were just fine..

Here is a picture of one of the batteries as I removed both in my investigation of a no start condition of the CAT Diesel...

Any folks see where the problem might be??????

Phil, here is my guess, I had been researching batteries boiling for some other reason, I forget. When I saw this thread it reminded me of some of the things I had found:

When charging amperage exceeds the level of the natural absorption rate, the battery may overheat, causing the electrolyte solution to bubble creating flammable hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas, when combined with oxygen from the air, is highly explosive and can easily be ignited by a spark

I had a 95 Nissan Pickup do that to me on startup years ago. I thought it blew up the engine at first and scared the crap out of me. Bad voltage regulator caused it. I was already running late... made for a super fun day.

Retired, work is a four letter word.
An internal short caused by calcification, reached the bottom of the plates and shorted out the anode to ground. Had this happen on a RV golf cart house battery one time, completely melted off the entire top of the battery, lucky it didn't burn the entire RV. How old were the batteries? Just saw you mentioned 5 years old so this is a possibility for sure.
