We're Off Part 2.... AZ-WY-MT-SD-AZ

There are three trails. The first goes around the base and can be done in about an hour. The other two connect and go farther out. If I did it again, I would probably just do the trail at the base. Also, parking there was horrendous last year. We ended up having to park down by the prairie dog town and hike up. The hike up will connect you to the two outer trails. If you go to the right when you reach the trail, it takes you the long way around. Go left and it isn’t far to the base of the tower. It is pretty fascinating and I would go back if I have the chance.

Bob @Bob902 how long do you realistically need at Devils Tower? We're leaving Billings, MT Friday morning and stopping at the Little Bighorn Battlefield which is on our way out. I'm not sure how long we'll be there (I know I gotta keep Annie out for the gift shop) but I was thinking of stopping at Devils Tower on our way into SD. I'm guessing I'll be leaving the the LBB around 11:00 am and it's 3.5 hours to DT so an ETA of around 2:30pm.

Is a couple hours enough time or do you really need the whole day? I was just trying to do it on the way there instead of going back another day from SD but I'm just not sure I'll have time to enjoy it without rushing. What say you? lol

Hi Dave,
LBB was a whim stop for us. We saw the signs and said yeah let’s check it out thinking 30-45 minutes or so visit time. Well 4 hours later we left. It certainly wasn’t a Griswald stop. The gift shop I wouldn’t worry about, it’s the trading posts you pass outside of the monument. Then you should worry.
I’ve read the reviews about LBB saying “meh” but because I like history and have an imagination it was one the highlights of our trip. A very unexpected surprise.. There are a lot of signs and markers as you drive through. There’s also few short hikes to points of interest.

I'm the guy that started the thread about the tree sap, a few weeks ago. You suggested that I use some 303 Graphene nano spray on the truck. I bought a bottle. My question is: can it be used on the plastic parts like along the bed rails, and lower mirror mountings?

I'm really enjoying your road trip. You should be a photographer, your pictures are terrific.

Thanks Pete. Yes you can use the Graphene all the plastic, rubber headlights, taillights and glass. On glass it's like Rain-X on steroids. lol

Thanks Brian, It is really beautiful up here! The weather has actually been pretty good tamp wise until today. I'd rather be out hiking when it's in the 60's (perfect weather) than upper 70's+. We were hoping to get a couple more hikes in today that's why we left early but the storm had different plans. 38* with 30mph+ winds is to cold for this desert rat. ?

Great pictures Dave. Too bad the weather was so nasty. Brings back memories of the last big trip with my parents when I was 6 or 7. We were going to go to Glacier with our kids but ended up having car trouble. Still would like to get back there.

It does get cold at the top of passes. I remember going into Yellowstone thru Beartooth the end of June. At the pass, 11,000 feet, it was 32*, at mid-day. Camping at Yellowstone Lake, about 7,000, it froze at night, but jumped up the low 70s as some as the sun came up. Has to do with the thin air.

I keep telling people there are no real mountains east of the Mississippi. They don't get it till they see the Rockies. And, they get better the farther North you go.

Thanks Lee. You're right the Rockies are amazing and not much back east can compare to them. I was counting on the weather being cold and unpredictable up top, it was the main level I wasn't. lol But people were still coming into the park in droves so I guess this weather doesn't bother a lot of people. I can deal with the cold to a degree but being cold and wet, no thanks! Annie's cold all the time. It'll be 100* out and she'll have a blanket on her legs while we're home watching tv.

When traveling to higher elevations I always pack several extra cloths/jackets but the wind was just brutal up there today. I think secretly Annie was a little happy because we did 7.4 miles yesterday and she likes to take a break in between. We still had fun and made the best of it and maybe one day we'll get back up here.

I can remember being in Maine at the new Penobscot bridge tower with an elevator that took us to the top. The highest mountain was I think 1600 feet from that lookout spot. I think it was next to Ft. Knox, not to be confused with the other one…

Yeah, still dreaming of getting back to Glacier. Would love to also get to Banff and Jasper up North of the border.
