Having worked in this area before, it's hilarious when they have some ridiculous number of possible patterns but limit it because someone left it some test code. It's impossible to test the full range, so we'll test, say 10, to make sure the error code works. Then the test code makes it into production and there are only 10 possible codes, making it easy to hack.

Happens all the time.

Exactly. And everyone else there was probably under the impression that their product was a modern day Fort Knox with the latest and greatest technology protecting it. Looks good on paper. But given the chance, human's will eff it up.

Why I went with an XLT for a Key, Old school kinda guy. Push button the new 2020 Mustang but got some of those shielding key fob holders so no need to worry about theft now. THEY really work and give you peace of mind for $10 ... It is not going to get better in the future so I'm dealing with it and adapting now.

Up until recently my vehicles were pretty much theft proof... all being manual transmissions and something like 87% of Americans can't drive a stick and most who can, are too old to be thieves!

I even had a TRX Tempo which was no target for joy rides, too reliable to steal for parts, AND a stick shift! Heck... I could leave it unlocked in downtown Chicago!

My buddy is a shop foreman at a Ford dealer and he says the anti theft is pretty hard to defeat on newer Fords. He's rarely heard of a Ford having the code cloned or stolen.

Saw an article recently about the most stolen vehicles. I forget how they normalized the data, but they did so to account for the pure numbers of vehicles on the road. Not a single Ford appeared on that list, but quite a few GM vehicles did (the 1500 series pickups are apparently either very desirable, easier to steal, or both).

Not that they weren't being stolen. Just that they were being stolen at lower rates than the vehicles shown on the list.

Specifically, they list the 2006 F-150. And having owned a 2007 version, they're pretty basic from today's vehicles. They only have the basic transponder key which is ridiculously easy to bypass. How many people hand over their keys to detailers, body shops, valet drivers, etc? These are all people you don't know, and all have more than enough time to clone the key and steal the vehicle at a later time.

These vehicles aren't being stolen because of weakness in the technology, but because of the people using them. People are always the weakest link.

see, that article isn't controlling for the relative number of vehicles on the road. of course the most popular vehicles will rank highly on that list. it's just saying that vehicles that sell well, are stolen more.

I had to dig a bit for it, but this is the one I was specifically referring to. It controls for the pure numbers sold, and is instead based on the likelihood said vehicle will be stolen.

Not to mention that if gang bangers saw anyone driving one, they'd shoot it for practice... ?

You may be right, but there is one thing I know for sure.... you never drove a TRX 5spd Tempo.
Better than a BMW 318 and actually approaching an M3 on a roadrace course, at least in terms of handling. The car was very capable and a stone riot to drive.
 Picture a 1984 190E without the "KCAR" grille!

My mother went grocery shopping and loaded the groceries into someone else's car, got in and started it up and realized it wasn't her car. It was two rows over.
Almost same with me. Opened car door to Hyundai Accent and got in. Happened to look in rearview mirror and saw the baby seat. Quickly departed the vehicle!

I feel like I've been reading about Chrysler products and the hackability of them for years now - but they all require access to the OBD port. Though I suppose for the cost of a smashed window, that's not a big deal. But I guess that also should turn on the alarm system. Oh well, one more reason I'm glad I bought a Ranger that fits in my garage.

It’s a type of scanner that read the signal transmitted by your remote if the vehicle is outside they can walk around your house to see if they can pick a signal up. Then that signal can be relayed to a second person who has a transmitter of that signal if you’re not driving your best bet is a faraday bag to keep your fobs in

Or just do what I did and get an XLT without all the extra goodies that come with fender stickers so it looks like less money to steal. I had a few Hyundais before this Ranger. That "meh on money" projection seems to help not get glass smashed/hacked.
