Just now saw this posting for veterans.

U.S. Naval Air Reserves, 68-74.

When I graduated from high school, June 1968, I knew I was likely to be drafted.
Career path was set working for my Dad. No collage for me.
The lottery system did not exist at this time.
On the advice of one of my Dad's friends I drove to the Alameda N.A.S.
About an hour from home.
Well they wanted me real bad. I was sworn in that day, taken to Navy facility at Treasure Island and given all my clothing with stencil kit.
Told to mark all the clothing and report back in two days.
Turns out two young men were in a car accident that were supposed to leave for basic training the weekend before.
I was to be a replacement for one of the recruits.
Flew out commercial to N.A.S. Memphis, TN.
Basic had started four days prior.
Normally as a reserve you are provided with indoctrination before joining active duty.
Not this kid. I learned real fast.

My rate was an AME. Primary duty was life support systems for pilots and crew.
For me this meant filling liquid oxygen tanks and servicing ejection seats.
Duty station was Alameda, CA. Served in attack squadrons VA-303 and VA-304.

I will say, enlisting in the military was the best thing at that time in my life.
I learned so many life skills that provided structure and discipline that have served me well. I always look back at this portion of my life with satisfaction.

While at Memphis I did receive a draft notice. I replied that "As you addressed this to me at N.A.S. Memphis, I will not be responding to your notice. I'm already spoken for".
