If, in fact, the addition of the "plastic piece" did increase the mpg on a constant basis, Ford would have already used it if only to increase the mpg's to make the EPA happy. A 2 mpg increase would be a big deal for a truck, and Ford would have already taken advantage of it.

Ford did - in fact - change the intake to mimic what the VT adds.

Well ain't that the cats meow !!!!
Now Velossa is gonna have to make a "Biggie Big Mouth" to compete with the Ford's hot rod mod....
Of course they want their "Biggie Big Mouth" to cost way more so it produces ooodles of HP more than stock !!!

Another placebo change, ike RAM AIR IV. Funny they didn't give it a fancy name too.

Has any 5g owner tried to adapt the 6g Ford parts, or see if they bolt on?

They may have incorporated a similar design but it is also more in line with the intake. The 5g is offset.

I just took my VT off finally after a couple years, guess what, no MPG impacts.

I will tell you what it did impact other than my wallet, the hood... The underside of my hood was blasted with water and road grime and it made the hood flutter like crazy.

Here's the thing the hood is sealed around the intake and essentially is an extension of the intake when closed.

You know what else is hot garbage? The AFE big scoop. The intake portion is bigger yes, but where it mounts at the box is actually smaller than factory because the plastic is thicker. So you actually have a smaller intake than factory at the air box.

I actually like the big mouth. Larger intake area will shove more air in theory. But probably does nothing. I have one with a drop in filter. Never see below 22mpg unless windy or towing. Based on forum logic its because of that part.

I mean it does look cool if you happen to notice it and in theory is ramming air into the intake. I get on average 23.5mpgs per the dash.

I make runs from Charleston SC to Viera Florida about every month. My last run I averaged 28mpg highway. I never noticed a difference in those numbers when adding the velossa tech back when I first got my truck. I will be making the Viera run again at some point now that it's off and I don't expect a difference.

My daily commute puts me on the Interstate for 13 miles and I seen no difference in MPGs on that run.

The best thing for mileage is your foot. Being light on the acceleration and using cruise control as much as humanly possible. Doing that I can hit a 30mpg average. I do have a 2wd version, I have to set up and a bunch of added weight as well.

Personally I wish I bought a tune and evic throttle controller instead of the intake stuff. I did finally yesterday.

Also using ethanol free gas will increase my MPGs but sometimes not enough to justify the price difference.

I guess the fact is the only thing it does is block the radiator and makes your hood flutter like a SOB on the highway while blasting water into the underside of the hood. But other than an emotional feel good or placebo affect that's all you're getting.

The 6g's version is in line with the intake and the whole thing from grill to scoop is redone they are not the same thing.

Side note, it is pushing more air but not into the intake it's breaking that hood to radiator core seal and making hood flutter (at least for me). Stock is still pulling cold air, and air still is being generally forced into that area by the resistance of the radiator.

We are not over pressurizing a sealed system with the only place to go being the intake. It ends up stressing the hood latch and mounts while forcing air essentially into the engine compartment and out hood seams as the hood lifts.

If it does make an improvement it may just be not noticeable enough for me and my driving habits. I have that AFE magnum somewhere as well unless I just threw it away at some point.

You know what I have a 3D printer maybe the ticket here is just that. I can make a new intake that fills the void under the hood to the grill where the VT big mouth is and runs right to either the stock scoop or directly to the air box. That should eliminate hood flutter and the seal issue while forcing the air right into the box.

Time to take some scans and fire up the car software.

Neither the AfE or the VT does that, not even in combination. If your hood is fluttering at highway speeds something is damaged already or modified in a bad way. Especially if you are getting water blasted under the hood. As for 'blocking the radiator' let's acknowledge that's not what is in front - it's the intercooler and the VT doesn't block it, even my thicker CVF intercooler.

I see S&B decided to copy Velossatech:

I wasn’t expecting it to do anything but I installed mine 3 or 4 tanks of fuel ago and it didn’t do anything. Still hovering around 22MPG like always. It looks cool which is why I bought it

It's been discussed a lot in previous threads and my (biased by early adoption/long term ownership) is it helps with steady highway mileage (tip - stay at 70MPH or lower). No extra noise that I don't care for anyway, no seat of the pants boost. I made other changes to my truck for appearance and ride quality which may have hurt my aerodynamics but the intake mods from the Big Mouth to the charge pipes and intercooler - almost a grand in total - enabled me to hit the factory advertised highway MPGs.

My suspicion is Ford made changes to the 6G in response to complaints by 5G owners that we weren't getting the mileage they advertised.

Let's acknowledge that when I took the VT out the hood flutter stopped. The water splatter was right above the vent where in bad weather the it entered the VT and blasted against the underside of the hood. That stopped too.

I went with the S&B airbox not grill scoop.

I had both the AfE and VT for years, they did nothing but look cool. If you take the AfE and measure it the output opening at the airbox is actually smaller than factory making it more restrictive. IE bigger mouth, smaller throat.

I bought both together closing on $200.

The S&B airbox was $300 and actually has unrestricted airflow. I will see if it actually does anything.

A EVC throttle controller is the same price as the VT/AFE combo and very much will save you fuel in economy mode and is a better use of your money if that's what you are going for.

I'll add it back in after running the S&B for a while to see if it makes a difference, but I don't have trouble hitting my advertised MPGs. I drove highway every day, granted here it's flat, and I am conservative on my gas pedal.

As far as S&B vs AFE a picture is worth a thousand words. Also the S&B has a removable door next to the windshield washer neck that you can open when weather is cooler for more airflow.

Because the intake is not necked down like the AFE, you get full advantage of that bigger opening as well.
